The last surviving member of the group who helped hide the Jewish girl Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis in Amsterdam has turned 100 years old.
Miep Gies was planning a quiet celebration of her birthday with friends and relatives.
She said she was not deserving of the attention, and others had done far more to protect Jews in the Netherlands.
She paid tribute to "unnamed heroes", picking out her husband Jan for his courageous defiance of the Nazis.
"He was a resistance man who said nothing but did a lot. During the war he refused to say anything about his work, only that he might not come back one night. People like him existed in thousands but were never heard," Miep Gies said in an email to the Associated Press this week.

Who was it who ultimately ratted them out to the Nazis?

God bless her.
According to the movie, an employee of the company.
I remember reading that someone was breaking into the office at night and the person heard the Franks upstairs.
In the play one of the people hiding the Franks and Van Damms gets blackmailed by an employee who for one reason or another asks the head of the company for a raise.
I don’t know how historically accurate the play is, but since it’s the only account that really give Anne’s diary life, I suppose it’s the only account we have.
In the play, Anne and Peter kiss as the Nazi car arrives to raid and arrest them. I do not believe Anne’s diary records that, so to be frank (pun not intended) I think it was an employee who was breaking in at night, blackmailing the family hiding the Franks and Van Damms, and so ratted them out when he/she didn’t get the raise they asked for.
Saw the movie many many years ago, so perhaps my memory is incorrect. Based on what I saw in the movie, a burglar broke into the first floor and heard a sound from the attic while he was robbing the shop below. When he was later picked up by the police — for another crime, I think — he sought leniency by offering info about the attic. How he knew that someone was hiding Jews, I don’t know.
Your explanation makes a lot more sense than mine.
My dad was a hero of the civil rights movement, a white bus driver in the south who refused to enforce jim crow and who raised his kids to know that it was a spanking offense to use any derogatory statements about another person.
There have been a few suspects but nobody’s made a sure decision yet.
The answer is revealed - to a high degree of probability - in a book entitled "The Hidden Life of Otto Frank" by Carol Ann Lee (Dutch, I believe, married to an American?). The paperback of this book was published in the US by Perennial, an imprint of Harper Collins, copyright 2002, 2003.
It turns out to have been, not surprisingly, a young Dutch Nazi Party member at the time, who was able to avoid prosecution by Dutch authorities for 50 years until his death in the 1990s.
That took a lot of courage. Back then, the Klan was an active terrorist organization and not just some senile old men who liked to wear dunce's caps and burn crosses.
Ping!!!
It’s quite amazing that G-d has rewarded this courageous woman with such a long life. And she must be in fairly good mental condition, considering that she is apparently capable of sending emails.
How current is that Picture?
Happy Birthday to you!
My guess is that it’s fairly current.
Yes, I guess I should have mentioned that this was in the 40s. Then in the late 50s he was the manager of the Houston Bus Terminal and he locked up the “colored” waiting room and told the Post House that if they didn’t serve blacks he would lock their doors too. So he integrated the largest public facility in Houston prior to the passage of the Civil Rights Act.
