Coal-fired power stations are death factories. Close them (James Hansen rant)
The Guardian (UK) ^ | February 15, 2009 | James Hansen

Posted on 02/17/2009 7:33:22 AM PST by CedarDave

A year ago, I wrote to Gordon Brown asking him to place a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants in Britain. ... The reason is this - coal is the single greatest threat to civilisation and all life on our planet.

The climate is nearing tipping points. Changes are beginning to appear and there is a potential for explosive changes, effects that would be irreversible, if we do not rapidly slow fossil-fuel emissions over the next few decades. ...

... How can people be expected to evaluate and filter out advice emanating from those pushing special interests? How can people distinguish between top-notch science and pseudo-science?

Those who lead us have no excuse - they are elected to guide, to protect the public and its best interests. ... If we do not change course, we'll hand our children a situation that is out of their control. One ecological collapse will lead to another, in amplifying feedbacks.

The amount of carbon dioxide in the air has already risen to a dangerous level. The pre-industrial carbon dioxide amount was 280 parts per million (ppm). Humans, by burning coal, oil and gas, have increased this to 385 ppm; it continues to grow by about 2 ppm per year.

The most threatening change, from my perspective, is extermination of species. ...

Clearly, if we burn all fossil fuels, we will destroy the planet we know. ...

Coal is not only the largest fossil fuel reservoir of carbon dioxide, it is the dirtiest fuel. ...

The trains carrying coal to power plants are death trains. Coal-fired power plants are factories of death. ... I estimated that in its lifetime [the proposed Kingsnorth power plant] would be responsible for the extermination of about 400 species ...

“Hansen is channeling Jimmy Carter.”

I think it’s more Rachel Carlson.

Exactly! When these people live a completely “carbon free” life themselves, I might listen to them. Until then, they are just hypocrites.

Hansen is not without his own Nemesis.

Steve McIntyre of Climate Audit hauls Hansen up by his short hairs rather regularly. It was McIntyre who forced Hansen to back off his pronouncement that 1998 was the warmest year on record, and putting that title back where it belongs, to 1934.

Coal is the only significant source of power generation native to the UK. We still have a bucketload of the stuff underground and the only reason we don’t still mine the stuff on any real scale any more is because Thatcher, to her eternal shame, completely shafted the industry back in the 1980s instead of supporting it. Which is why we are now mostly dependent on foreign sources of energy when before we were net energy exporters in a big way....

I just retired after 31 years in a coal fired power plant. the most deadly thing there is the stress caused by the rotating shifts.

Few make it to retirement age. Most find a “medical” reason to quit, (bad knees, bad back, stroke, We have allowed several very incompetent persons to use “medical” as an excuse to get them out of the company, One died from appendicitis, heart attacks, alcoholism. Only ONE got a disease (Mesothelioma, Asbestos). One from Louisiana, cancer capitol of the world, died of cancer. He smoked like a chimney.

The cooling lake is loaded with fish, Bald eagles are all over the place in winter, and I have seen more deer here than anywhere I have ever lived. There were were few deer thirty years ago.

The worst thing about that coal fired plant is that we had a couple of JERKS promoted to supervisors .

Hansen is full of it.

But Algore says the greatest threat is the internal combustion engine! Dissention in the lunatic fringe.

The coal fired plants should be converted to nuclear power.

Easier said than done.

Good question. During the Bush years, supporters cried "muzzling" if he did not express his views as frequently as he wanted. No with Obama supporting his views to the max, I suspect he's the poster child, and the red carpet and feast on the table are laid before him.

Is there ANYTHING in nature that is irreverseable?

This is just fear-mongering plan and simple, just like the stimulus bill. Same playbook, it’s time we fight back.

I enjoy soooooo much watching McIntyre drop kick Hansen, Schmidt, Mann, and others.
