Pajamas Media ^ | February 21 | Kyle Smith

De-gayify. Oscar wants to rebuild its viewership and it hires as its producer … the guy who made Dreamgirls? If there’s anything Oscar desperately needs, it’s to get rid of its showstopping (i.e., funstopping) song-and-dance numbers. No disrespect to our gay brothers and sisters, but perhaps they can be persuaded to watch even without those excruciating Broadway interludes. And if there were as many gay folks in the country as Oscar seems to think, then gay-themed movies (Brokeback Mountain, Milk, Batman and Robin) would do a lot better at the box office....

I thought it was funny the year “Brokeback” was up for the Oscar.

The sequel didn't do nearly as well.

Lots of outrage at the pervs getting whacked. Pity that.

Like what? The Best PIcture winners have generally been fairly enduring. With some notable exceptions.

I have not seen a movie win best picture since Titanic that deserved it. Crash was an OK movie...but Cinderella Man was far better as were a number of other movies...they pick movies for political reasons and bore the heck out of me...so I don’t bother watching.

The only decent that has been made over the past 5 years was the German movie “The Lives of Others.” Nevermind “Best Foreign Film”, it should have won “Best Picture”, period.

I have one and I’m betting it would really get people excited about the academy awards.

Announce this is the last one ever and mean it.

I know it would get my attention if these marathon sessions of hollywood masterbation would be ending for all times and I’m betting it would do the same for most of America.

Political reasons? The Best Picture winners tend to be fairly conservative...Shakespeare in Love, Gladiator, Return of the King...

Why do you think an 80+ year American tradition should end? Do you think the other industry awards should also cease. It’s itneresting to know what the artists themselves think is their best work for a given year.

I haven't nor cared to watch the Oscar's in decades. Back in the 1960’s it was a show that the whole family could watch.

The only enjoyment I get out of it (and other narcissistic award shows) is to go online tomorrow and see what ridiculous dresses were worn.

People need to wise up.

STOP seeing their trashy movies and $ilence them for a change.

I think over 25 years ago, Tim Kazurinsky did a “ways to improve the Oscars” bit on Saturday Night Live. One that I remember was “cut out the damn songs!”

The Oscars used to be held in March. Here's a line from Hope.

Welcome to the Oscars or as they call it at my house Passover.
