Limbaugh Rallies Conservatives to Find 'Right Candidate' (Romney wins CPAC straw poll)
Fox News ^ | February 28, 2009

Rush Limbaugh was 15 minutes early to the stage, but no one was complaining Saturday evening in Washington, D.C., at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Quite the contrary. On the conference's third and final day, the conservative talk radio host was the headliner, and the crowd greeted him with an immense ovation.

"Ladies and gentleman, this is my first ever address to the nation," Limbaugh joked, noting that FOX News and C-SPAN were broadcasting the speech live.

Limbaugh then spent his first 15 minutes giving an impassioned summary of what it means to be a conservative before turning the focus to the movement's recent electoral record.

"We can take this country back. All we need is to nominate the right candidate," he said.

The speech was the culmination of an event that featured often fiery speeches by some of top names of the conservative movement and the Republican party, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and conservative commendator Ann Coulter.

Rush is in the business of sending us forward.

Really? When did he give up the radio business?

We need an actor to lead the party—a conservative actor.

I still have strong connections in New England. The consensus there among many dems is that they would have voted for Romney in 08 and will if he gets the nomination in 2012.

I know he’s been squishy on some conservative principles (abortion, healthcare), but you have to consider the environment he was running in, I think. Maybe not my first choice, and he wasn’t in ‘08. But I would rather have voted for Romney last time than for Juan McCain.

Romney? Bleeaaachh... Come on now, we need a REAL conservative.

I see that you have not named one yet. I do not think that you would recognize one if he/she was standing right in front of you.

And your point is...?

I’m sure I am going out on a limb by even suggesting you have a point. Prove us all wrong and say something smart.

I objected to Romney in 2008 and object to him now. He is NO Conservative. I won’t support anyone that became an Indy from Republican when President Reagan took office of was glad he didn’t have to go in the service for Vietnam but while running said he wished he could have gone.

Give me a break! Romney is a non-starter as is Rudy, McCain, Thompson, Huckabee, and Paul. We have races to win in 2010 but some of you Romney people want to hand this liberal health care person the nomination. Not going to happen.

Why not work for 2010 and forget 2012? Makes a lot more sense.

“But I would rather have voted for Romney last time than for Juan McCain.”

I totally feel the same way. McCain got my vote when he chose his running mate. I honestly thought about sitting it out. Romney would have gotten it automatically.

I just don’t think he’s ‘the’ person the GOP is looking for.

Maybe I'll get up early tomorrow to find out what the "talking heads" aren't talking about.

After hearing Rush, I'm thinking of wearing my 2001 RECALL MC CAIN shirt again.

Romney is an opportunist, but he seems to be a fairly reliable opportunist. And one hell of an accomplished character. Possibly too accomplished. As someone pointed out, he looks like a male model for expensive business wear.

Still, if the Republicans want someone to wash away the “stupid party” smear, Romney would be it. Romney has actually accomplished something in the real world, outside politics, unlike Obama.

And he was fairly non-horrible on immigration, etc. during the primaries, unlike certain other candidates. If only he wasn’t a mormon...

What's up with the headline? Some here get the impression that Rush's comment and Mitt's spot in the poll are somehow related.

I'd venture the guess that Rush did not think of Mittens, when saying we should rally behind the right canidate.

In 2012 we can win with an authentic Conservative... the first time after 20 years.

I am sure as heck not going to waste this opportunity by siding with Willard.

Rush would be a powerful leader, but we need him doing what he does best.

Moreover, as I am reading the posts, I see people are doing exactly what Rush predicted they would do,whine. Many of them are correct about one thing...we will lose once again in 2010 with this type of complaining and negative dismal attitudes.

CPAC has a powerful three (3) days and the whining continues... over a poll? Shaking head in total amazement....

You got it right. Why on the Earth, are we talking about 2012, when we have a history to make in 2010? Let us start with March 31st special election in 20th District of new york state. We need to win by more than 10%. Go to Tedisco website and contribute to him. He is a very conservative candidate.

Rush’s ability to analyze current events and lay out a compelling position on the issues is virtually unmatched. I would love to be able to hear great orators like William Jennings Bryan as a comparison, but I think his skill is one for the ages.

I say this as one who has not always been a “ditto head” or even a big fan of Rush, but as I’ve listened more, I’ve come to appreciate his skill, intelligence, and passion.

It’s no wonder Obama singled him out; there’s no one else in the conservative movement who communicates the conservative viewpoint any better, and few who can even come close. However, I think in her own way, Sarah Palin is one. And let’s face it - it’s not just what you say, but how you say it.

While I think Romney is pretty good.. I really think we need a man’s man.. A tough talking John Wayne type candidate.. Think : Barry Goldwater.. Ronald Reagan..Clint Eastwood, along those lines. If Fred Thompson wasn’t so old, he would have been perfect..

Petreaus... sumpin like that. He needs to capture the American spirit, and needs to define, what it is to be an American.. A rugged individualist a freedom loving, gun toting, life loving guy, no nonsense straight talking guy.. The opposite of the “elegant” man now in office.

Romney is good.. but he just seems soo... hmmmm.... he just seems so beltway, so politician like.
