WASHINGTON President Barack Obama was briefed Saturday by Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen about the drug wars in Mexico and wanted to know how the United States can help.
"Clearly one of the things the president was interested in was the U.S military capability that may or may not apply to our cooperation with the Mexicans," said a U.S. military official who requested anonymity because the discussions were private. "He was very interested in what kind of military capabilities may be applied."
Mullen briefed Obama Saturday morning about discussions with Mexican military leaders about the drug wars there.
Mullen, who was in Mexico on Friday, has referred to the recent spike in violence as a crisis. Mullen has said Mexico could borrow from U.S. tactics in the fight against terrorism as it battles a crisis of drug-related violence along the U.S.-Mexico border.

2006 Press Releases
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 24, 2006
KBR AWARDED U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY CONTINGENCY SUPPORT PROJECT FOR EMERGENCY SUPPORT SERVICES
ARLINGTON, Virginia KBR announced today that its Government and Infrastructure division has been awarded an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract to support the Department of Homeland Securitys (DHS) U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities in the event of an emergency. KBR is the engineering and construction subsidiary of Halliburton (NYSE:HAL).
With a maximum total value of $385 million over a five-year term, consisting of a one-year based period and four one-year options, the competitively awarded contract will be executed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District. KBR held the previous ICE contract from 2000 through 2005.
We are especially gratified to be awarded this contract because it builds on our extremely strong track record in the arena of emergency operations support, said Bruce Stanski, executive vice president, KBR Government and Infrastructure. We look forward to continuing the good work we have been doing to support our customer whenever and wherever we are needed.
The contract, which is effective immediately, provides for establishing temporary detention and processing capabilities to augment existing ICE Detention and Removal Operations (DRO) Program facilities in the event of an emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs. The contingency support contract provides for planning and, if required, initiation of specific engineering, construction and logistics support tasks to establish, operate and maintain one or more expansion facilities.
The contract may also provide migrant detention support to other U.S. Government organizations in the event of an immigration emergency, as well as the development of a plan to react to a national emergency, such as a natural disaster. In the event of a natural disaster, the contractor could be tasked with providing housing for ICE personnel performing law enforcement functions in support of relief efforts.
ICE was established in March 2003 as the largest investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security. ICE is comprised of four integrated divisions that form a 21st century law enforcement agency with broad responsibilities for a number of key homeland security priorities.

Amen! Heck, the National Guard can do their jobs by just standing on the other side of the fence while the leechers..er, I mean mexicans can fight THEIR drug war.
Mexico is so screwed if Obama “helps” them with their drug war like he is “helping” our country’s economic problems.
I agree with you. If we setup a safe zone for those Mexicans within that buffer zone, we will do more to help stabilize it for the honest Mexicans who want a better life IN their own country.
Bad things are coming.
No invasion needed. We don’t need anything there except tequila. We have bigger fish to fry like Venezuela, China, Russia etc.
Just booby trap the border with motion detector-connected machine guns and landmines on the border and we’re set. No manpower needed.
Somehow I think Mexico would come out ahead in the long run if it was Obama doing the invading. Like if we take Baja N and S, and most of Northern Mexico, then gave everyone there health care and Alternative Tax payouts.
Plus the disarmament issue I mentioned previously.
Mexico is a socialist state, that’s why you can’t grow strawberries in Mexico, but yo can in California with Mexican labor.

This is getting ugly, isn’t it?
Oh yeah. Nice of the media to pay a little attention to it finally.
Why does this all make me very nervous?
________
I wonder. Is he looking for his *crisis* as his poll numbers and the stock market drop daily?

Obama is going to give California to Mexico.
Wait and see.
“Ten bucks says al-qaeada is involved and has been so for some time.”
They are not the only players:
“Reforma reported that for at least the last ten years the Russian mafia was supplying Mexican drug traffickers with radars, automatic weapons, grenade launchers, and small submersibles in exchange for cocaine, amphetamines, and heroin. It cited a 1996 sting operation in which undercover DEA agents posing as Russian mafia members sold Carillo Fuentes operatives 300 AK-47s and ammunition in Costa Rica.”
"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum."
Reminds me of those devises that foil the GPS guidance of cruise missiles that the KGB gave Hussein. We destroyed them- with cruise missiles.
“Mullen has said Mexico could borrow from U.S. tactics in the fight against terrorism “
What tactic....leaving your borders undefended to let any and all terrorists in that have the desire?
