Activists to Prod Obama, Congress to Overturn 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

President Obama says he wants to reverse "Don't Ask Don't Tell," the Clinton-era policy that prevents openly gay men and women from serving in the military. But so far the White House has been noncommittal about how and when he will try to make that happen.

In an effort to prod the president and Congress to act, activists -- gay, straight, military and civilian -- will converge on Capitol Hill Friday to rally behind an effort in the House to overturn the policy, which has been a continuing source of controversy since it became law 15 years ago.

"The repeal, it is possible this year -- certainly doable in this Congress within the next two years," predicted Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), which defends gay men and women in the military who are affected by the policy.

Organizers said several retired military officers, members of Congress and individuals who were discharged under Don't Ask Don't Tell will speak at the noon rally on the Capitol lawn in support of The Military Readiness Enhancement Act, a bill recently introduced by Rep. Ellen Tauscher, D-Calif., that would overturn the policy.

"This is an important civil rights issue. We also need the strongest military possible, and we need to recruit the best and brightest Americans. Some happen to be gay," Tauscher said Monday.

Supporters of the bill say Don't Ask Don't Tell not only affects capable people currently serving, but it discourages future recruits at a time when military readiness has been stretched thin.

"This is about strength, about the fighting power of the military. It's about numbers and about kicking qualified people out of the military," said Brian McGough, senior legislative adviser to VoteVets.org.

If openly homosexual men and women will be able to shower and bunk with members of the same sex, then let’s end the segregation between men and women in the military altogether. Everybody strip for your physical.

Just pointing out the problems such things cause.

If there was no threat posed by homosexuals among heterosexuals in locker rooms, there would be no need to ban the use of cellphones (with cameras) in locker rooms.

What an asinine statement.. Why on earth would anyone in the military or any non homofacist want homofacists to be in the military?

My prediction. The president has a 120-member meeting at the White House (similar to the healthcare and financial episodes). One hundred of the folks will be gays, ten political folks from DC...and ten generals sitting there very uncomfortably. Then the president will smile at the camera...saying that a special task force will examine this problem over the next year and make a recommendation to him. The media will declare this a wonderful success. Then, everyone will go home.

A year will pass, and the report will be totally screwed up with no formal recommendation. Nothing will be changed in 2009, 2010, or 2011. At some point during the election run of 2012....he will make the promise again. Naturally...he say something to the effect of ‘bringing change’.

“If openly homosexual men and women will be able to shower and bunk with members of the same sex, then let’s end the segregation between men and women in the military altogether. Everybody strip for your physical.”

Very valid point. Ultimately, the main goal of the feminist and homosexual political agenda is to utterly destroy the idea that there is any distinction whatsover between male and female. If one is for homosexual behavior in the military and for redefining marriage as a gender-neutral institution, there is no reason that same person would be against gender-neutral showers, locker rooms, public restrooms, prisons, hospitals, etc.
