Police say an Iraqi soccer player has been shot dead just as he was about to kick what could have been the tying goal in a weekend game south of Baghdad.

Only in the socialist country of America. The rest of the world takes the game seriously
Why, in socialist America they vote to chose their College Football National Champions ...LOL, and they reward failure in their professional football leagues with first draft picks to "level the playing field" and make things "fair". And they have artificial salary caps so you can't assemble the best talent in one place, wouldn't want to promote excellence, would they?.
Of course they have no demotion or promotion in their leagues as they do in Soccer leagues in the rest of the World, that wouldn't be fair.
But just to ensure everyone's self esteem is maintained and everyone feels good they hold domestic competitions and declare the winners "World Champions"...LOL!
Seems to me it's an American problem, not a soccer one...
“I thought keeping score was illegal, but scoring was okay. Whoda think? “
only in America. wouldn’t want to hurt their self esteeeem
Boooo, hissss. :)
I guess somebody had to say it, right?
I love the idea of a demotion to a lower league. No more listening to some idiot shouting “Who Dey” in his silly striped coat.
Yep, and don’t forget the ultimate fairness of giving the ball to one team, and then to the other in American armpitball, so that no offensive player would bew force to to play defense and no defender forced to play offense. No wonder we have been unable to win wars of late!
“That makes the game a lot more interesting. We should try it with the NBA.”
I was always a fan of making golf a contact sport.
This makes Woody Hayes look mild-mannered.
not just columbia anymore
With the NBA, it could easily be the opposing players doing the shooting rather than some fan.
You don't "kick" goals in soccer.
You can kick a field goal or a conversion in rugby and of course you can kick the extra point in American Football.
In soccer you shoot or you score. if you score from a penalty or free kick then you "take" the penalty, you don't "kick" it.
Another weird Americanism that used to be used in soccer reports was to (ironically given this instance) refer to a header as a "head shot". The media has wised up to that and now uses the correct terminology.
Yellow card, yellow card, definitely!
Let's not get carried away here!
CA....
Well, ya got me on the Bowl Division college football. Oddly enough every other level of football in America, including the smaller college has a playoff system.
As far as giving the last place team the first pick, well it’s better than watching some team like Detroit stink up the place year after year (oh wait, bad example).
Salary caps are very good. It forces the teams to take into consideration what they need versus what’ available. If you don’t have something to encourage the talent to spread around a bit you wind up with America’s major league baseball and the Yankees, or the English Premier league with Manchester, Liverpool, and Arsenal. Everybody knows that the other teams in that league have very little chance at all of winning the championship. In the NFL, Detroit could conceivably go from 0-16 this year to a playoff berth next year (well, let’s not get carried away here.) In England, they wouldn’t even be in the Premier League they would have been relegated, so there would be little hope of them rebuilding anytime soon.
Seriously, how many small fry teams wind up barely making it to the Premier League level and get relegated the next year. I would think fans would want to see the best competition available for their money. Having three or four sharks in the tank with a bunch of small fish isn’t interesting, in fact it is extremely boring. In the NFL, they say anything can happen on any given Sunday. I have never heard that phrase applied to soccer with any meaning.
Put the Superbowl champions up against any other team of 52 players that any other country in the world could throw at them playing American football and they would win. That makes them world champs in my book.
It’s interesting to fy over Baghdad and see how many soccer games are going on in empty lots. It kinda reminds me of growing up, except in the Gulf South it was backyard football.
Depends on who you’re scoring with, I guess...
In what other sport is it encouraged to propel the ball with the cranium (guarding one of God’s greatest creations, the human brain), while denying the use of another marvelous tool, the human hand?
Why stop there? Why do we play sports with sticks?
