Residents Face $400 In Fines For Not Recycling

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Lakewood residents could be charged up to $400 if they don't recycle.

A new law makes recycling mandatory starting July 1 for people who get municipal trash collection, NewsChannel5 reported.

If people do not separate recyclable materials, the city can charge a fee. For the first violation, it's a minimum of $50, $100 for the second offense and up to $400.

The new law authorizes the city to either charge residents a fee for city employees to separate recyclable materials or to stop trash collection to a home altogether.

An educational handbook will be sent out to residents.

I am sure the residents of Lakewood, Ohio are quite thrilled at this development.

Not all of them. 9:15 am Palin rally in Lakewood. People went to work late and took their kids to the rally.

Nothing wrong with this nation that recycling 50,000,000 Liberals wouldn’t cure.

Well the article says that the city can stop trash collection, but I doubt they would allow the home owner to cancel it. Where would the city get its tax money from?

Charge an in lieu of fee, PLUS charge you tipping fees when you haul it in?

Perhaps this post from last Monday is still relevant to this discussion. Monday, March 16, 2009 8:17:52 AM · 21 of 25 Irish Queen to BGHater

We moved from the Cenral Coast of California to Northern Nevada. One of the perks of living in rural Nevada is that our county does not have recyling. Hallelujah! No yellow, green, or blue bins. No more sorting! No more stinky fly attracting bins! Waste Management picks up everything in one giant container once a week.

My sister and her husband came from Southern California for visit.

After carrying their luggage into our guest room, my brother-in-law asked me to follow him out to their car. "These are for you."He handed me two white plastic bags. One bag contained empty plastic water bottles; the other bag held soda pop cans.

I flipped open the trash can lid.

My brother-in-law was horrified. "Stop! I saved these for you, for you recycle bins."

I laughed, "This is my one-and-only recycle bin--everything goes in here." He was shocked,"But, but, plastic and aluminum must be recycled."

"There is no curbside recyling in this county." I handed the bags back to him with a smile. Take the bags back home with you if you want to recycle them."

He dropped the bags into our large green trash can.

Just a note to those who by choice or law have and use recycle bins. Much of what you carefully sort into the appropriate bins is never actually recycled at all. Unless a company like Waste Management can make a profit selling the stuff, it is recyled right into the landfill.

I lived in Lakewood from 1981 to 1988. Very family oriented city, beautiful with 60-100 foot trees all over. Every house has a tree.

There were two streets of mansions: Lake and Clifton. Lake avenue mansions had their back yards to Lake Erie, about 100-200 feet from the road. Lakewood park would get you to the lake. That’s where the Sarah Palin rally was held, I’d guess.

I don’t know what has happened to the city that this stupid legislation passed. I’d guess it was slipped in as a “recycling bill” without anyone knowing about the $400 fine.

A lot of the core people moved to Westlake and then Avon Lake. The dems gave us Section 8 losers. Now there are a ton of foreclosures and houses selling for under $100k. Values are down 35% or more.

They claim they made money on recycling the last few years instead of paying to haul it to a landfill. Right now they are giving it away, but it's better than paying to landfill it.

>>>Or the dumpster at the nearest apartment complex.

My brother-in-law was a pill. His dumpster of choice was a grocery store’s. He used to say he was going to St. Danny’s when he had to make a run. That’s probably why they are out of business—the high cost of their trash disposal.

Flakewood, Ohio - gay capital of the region. It sits in very liberal Cuyahoga County, adjacent to Cleveland. If I were a resident of this oppressive suburb, I would go to great lengths to circumvent this ridiculous law.

Recycling aluminum makes sense. Recycling cardboard makes sense, because cardboard usually accumulates at retail locations, so there's a lot of volume in a few places.

I'll give 'em aluminum and cardboard if they are willing to pay market value plus a fee to compensate for the time I spend sorting.

Pyrex has a higher melting point than ordinary glass, so it prevents the molten regular glass from going through the extruder well. So if there’s a pyrex glass in a batch of recycled glass, it (the molten glass) all goes to the landfill.
