4 cops shot, suspect dead after Calif. traffic stop

Police say suspect behind two separate shootings involving officers

OAKLAND, Calif. - Four officers were in critical condition and a suspect dead on Saturday after gunfire at a traffic stop led to a massive manhunt that ended in a shootout, police said.

Two officers were shot in the first incident just after 1 p.m. after they stopped the suspect's vehicle in east Oakland, said Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason.

The suspect fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies.

Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland shut to traffic.

I haven’t had a chance to read all of the posts - so this may have already been answered - do police officers wear bullet proof vests daily?

I can only speak for California but yes, daily. Don’t know one cop who goes without a vest. We actually spend a good amount of money on them. But these are not vests that will stop rifle rounds.

No, I’m Canadian by birth. Being a Kiwi is something I did later in life.

Oh, I see. Now having them in Canada would not have been surprising at all.

he used on 3 other SWAT cops he hit, one of which died as well as the 2 traffic cops..

They had that slightly wrong, it was one of the motor officers, Officer John Hege, who was critical through the afternoon and well into the night, but who has now also died.

I was heartened to know that someone cared enough in that hell hole to tell the cops where this thug had retreated.

And someone else cared enough to give one of the Motorcycle officers CPR.

Even in the worst neighborhoods, there are Good Guys. Which is what makes the job of the police in those neighborhoods so hard.

I wouldn’t do squat for SF.

No wonder they can’t fill their vacancies.

Who in his right mind would want to be a cop in a city where the DA won’t ask for the death penalty for cop killers?

I can’t believe people were actually taunting the police when this happened. Did any of our MSM have the decency to capture this on film, and discuss it so we can see what the police have to deal with on a daily basis?

No, because they’re too busy promoting racial division and class warfare instead of reporting on actual events.

That was my first thought after wondering how one guy could have done so much damage.

I wondered if it was one of those gang bangers who joined up specifically to improve their skill set. Not badmouthing the military here, but it does happen.

I hear that it’s happening an awful lot lately.

What was posted here last night from that youtube site stunned me, not certain why, but it did. That they are upset because how dare a policeman who doesn’t even live there might dare arrest someone who does — never mind that is all supposition — boggles my mind... I feel like we are going backwards to the wild west or worse...

As well one may join and return as a trainer........grateful for their service yet if they did it for criminal enterprise I say doom on em for doing that if it was singular reason for serving.

Just my opinion of course.......:o)

Stay safe !

Yeah, I’d like to hear the story too. I’m wondering if any politics got thrown in.

That’s one thing about being on the police dept., if they want you, they pretty much got you. They will get the first shots off.

We’ll have to wait and see how it all happened. 3 to 5 more and I can retire. Oh, wait, gotta check my lotto tickets, maybe I can retire today.

The 4th Police Officer died today. I don't know if that has been posted in the thread yet.

Maybe the title can be changed [sadly].

All four police officers are dead, and the Suspect is also dead...

One of my uncles was a policeman with the LAPD (Los Angeles). He moved from a nice place in Malibu because the Black Panthers in the 1960's threatened to kill his family...

Dirty Harry Callahan "Sweet was killed with the first shot. Besides, they were tipped off. They knew we were coming, Briggs."

According to reports, the punk was hiding in the closet for concealment.

Being the ‘’Bitter clinger’’ that I am, God and guns, (so sayeth Obamarx) I have to think that this rat killed 4 cops because he didn’t want to go back to jail. (I saw that Fox reported that he was wanted for violating his parole)

Obviously he only believed in the ‘’guns’’ part of the equation. I’m thinking that now he will be spending eternity in a different sort of jail. And from what I understand, there won’t be any parole or release date.

The next problem is closed doors on opposite sides of the room - stand out of the line of fire from one, and you’re in the line of fire from the other.

"He's not a monster," said his sister, 24-year-old Enjoli Mixon, whose apartment on 74th Avenue was where Mixon was slain in a gun battle with police that left two Oakland SWAT officers dead. "I don't want people to think he's a monster. He's just not. He's just not."

Lovelle Mixon was on parole arising from an offense in San Francisco. Mixon was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon stemming from an armed robbery in San Francisco, the family members said.

According to law enforcement sources, the SWAT team officers entered an apartment and approached a closet. Suddenly Mixon, hiding in the closet, opened fire through the door, killing two officers and wounding a third. Officers fired back, killing the gunman.

The air is a bit cleaner in Oakland now.
