This is Not the Freedom Tower: Money Trumps Patriotism in the Name Change to 1 WTC
New York Post ^ | March 27, 2009 | Tom Topousis

Posted on 03/27/2009 6:58:55 AM PDT by Sergeant Tim

Freedom is out of fashion at Ground Zero.

Once hailed as a beacon of rebirth in the aftermath of Sept. 11, the Freedom Tower has been stripped of its patriotic name -- which has been swapped out for the more marketable "One World Trade Center," Port Authority officials conceded yesterday.

More than seven years after the terror attacks and amid an effort to market the tower to international tenants, sentiment gave way to practicality.

"As we market the building we will ensure that the building is presented in the best possible way," said PA Chairman Anthony Coscia.

"One World Trade Center is its address. It's the address that we're using. It's the one that's easiest for people to identify with, and, frankly, we've gotten a very interested and warm reception to it."

Debra Burlingame, whose brother Charles Burlingame was the pilot aboard American Airlines Flight 77 that was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon, said the renaming of the tower is one more example that the nation is forgetting 9/11.

"If we can't say the word freedom out loud, God help us," she said.

"I understand the decision from a marketing point of view. But it saddens me that it's no longer economically viable to declare who we are."

That? That’s “Bush’s Fault 1.0”

Katrina is now “Bush’s Fault 2.0”

And Abu Ghraib is “Bush’s Fault 3.0”

The economic disaster that was moderated by Democrat oversight? “Bush’s Fault 4.0”

Sounds like they are going to get Chinese and Islamic money to pay for it. I don't know this...but would not be surprised.

We should call it the 911 Memorial Tower of Freedom, or the 911 Memorial Tower of Liberty.

But we have a crew in the White House and the House and Senate who are appeasers, and who want to fundamentally change our freedom and liberty and destroy the free market in the process.

What a crying shame...we simply must rise up as a people and route these bums, vipers, and marxists out on a rail...starting in 2010 and completing the job in 2012.

Hearing this makes me wish we had rebuilt the Twin Towers exactly as they were, several years ago.

If people were afraid to occupy the space, we could have just transferred the UN there.

Appartently, half the building will be leased by China and they did not want to be associated with the word Freedom.

Where is William Wallace when you need him.

Forget, Freedom Tower or "One World Trade Center,"
This thing should be named: "One Butt Ugly Building".

And that's all I can say, without being sued.

I presume they need to court more international money because downtown investment banking firms won't be the ones occupying large portions of it any longer.

China wouldn’t rent floors of the freedom tower unless the word freedom was removed.

Heard it on fox this am.

I really don’t have a problem with this at all. In fact, while I can sympathize with the families of all the 9/11 victims, I’ve really come to resent their unreasonable intrusion into every minute aspect of the Ground Zero redevelopment.

I wonder how long before Obama, Ried and Pelosi outlaw Norman Rockwell paintings?

Notice it said “Freedom of Worship” and NOT “Freedom FROM Religion”.

There are those who seek to make atheism the defacto state religion. Like a kinder gentler Soviet Union, or Saudi Arabia. You can “keep it in private” as long as it is NEVER brought up publicly. Push us into the closet. At the same time the homosexual agenda is openly promoted to primary students.

I've always found that Norman Rockwell piece very intriguing -- and even a bit disturbing.

The first two "freedoms" he presents are well-established liberties that are enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.

The last two are nothing more than utopian, collectivist nonsense that have no place in a free nation. One of the sobering realities of human existence is that we are forced to contend with "want" and "fear" on a regular basis. What separates us from animals is that we are capable of facing them, and dealing with them.

I like One World Trade Center.

Freedom Tower is a little corny, really.

What do Chavez and Castro have to say about this?

“One World” trade center. Yep. Nothing insulting about that.

The word is that the Chicoms have rented a lot of space in the Freedom Tower.

Hillary probably made a deal to get rid of that ugly name “Freedom Tower”, after all human rights don’t mean much when you need the chicoms to buy your debt that will enslave people.

I presume they need to court more international money because downtown investment banking firms won't be the ones occupying large portions of it any longer.

They always needed to court government and international tenants because there simply isn't any need for all that office space in Lower Manhattan. And that was true even BEFORE last year's meltdown in the financial sector.

When they broke ground on Seven World Trade Center (the 52-story building at the north end of the site that also collapsed on 9/11) a few years ago, the only lease that was signed at the time involved the developer's own company.
