Easy Access: $5,000 and One Hour Buys 10 Guns

in Richmond, Va. -- one of hundreds held every weekend across the state of Virginia and the country. We gave Samaha $5,000 and one hour to see how many guns he could buy, and how many questions he would be asked.

For Samaha, the Glock handgun was a particularly painful purchase. It was the same kind of gun used to kill his sister Reema when she was a freshman at Virginia Tech. Just holding the gun in his hand was difficult. < snip > Samaha walked back into the gun show, and within minutes he was out again, this time carrying a Colt AR 15, a semi-automatic assault weapon very similar to an M16. We asked if there were any questions asked.

Over the course of the hour, Samaha purchased 10 guns: three rifles, four shotguns, one handgun. He could have purchased many more handguns, but he wanted to abide by Virginia State law, which allows the purchase of one handgun per month, and two assault weapons.

Gun rights groups don't want to see the loophole closed because they fear that background checks will hurt business at gun shows, and also threaten privacy rights. They also argue that the Virginia Tech shooter didn't buy his gun at a gun show. < snip >

Even though Samaha immediately turned in all the weapons he bought at the gun show to the Richmond Police Department, Nunziato pointed out that if Samaha had wanted to, he could have caused a lot of damage with the guns he purchased.

"There were three or four police cars in the parking lot [at the gun show]. None of them could have stopped him [Samaha] with the firepower he bought," said Nunziato.

If he used that five thousand dollars to buy a used car, how many people could he have run over? We need to close the used car loophole!

The media scratches its head as they lose their ratings, and some their jobs, while making news instead of just reporting it.

So did he just decide not to purchase another handgun, or was he not able to? I loathe the media.

Around here private sellers walk around with signs on their back listing what they have, or on occasion actually have a table. The gun show guys post signs saying you’re not allowed to trade in the parking lot, but I don’t really see how they can enforce it at this particular location.

Awwwww poor Samaha.....if he wasn’t such a pussy he may have been a sheepdog and trained / encouraged his family and friends to take responsibility for their own security his sister and others may have survived that attack !

.... Now he wants everyone else to be a self imposed victim like him. As to his personal demons with a chunk of plastic and metal .......boo !

If he took that $5,000 to the gas station and started filling jerry cans and buying cigarette lighters imagine the harm he could do if he had a mind to. Criminy.

In the State of Washington you join the Washington Arms Collectors Association for $35. If you don’t have a CCW permit they will do a background check on you for $15. Once you are checked out you get a badge and can buy and sell at the gunshow with other members.

But - each member has gone through a background check - either through their CCW permit or the $15 check.

Most of the sellers at the shows are licensed dealers so you go through the paperwork. A few tables are private folks, and a few guys walking around with a rifle with a for sale sign sticking out of the barrel.

Wouldn’t this count as straw purchases?

Yes. What ABC did was illegal.

In CA, you need to use an FFL for every transaction. There is also a 10 day waiting period, a $25 hand gun “safety certificate” and you are limited to one handgun purchase a month.

Oh yeah, any handgun must be on the CA DOJ Approved List.
Don’t ask. Stupidity is an epidemic here.

God I miss my 2nd Amendment Rights.

If only Reema had carried a Glock of her own, things might have been different.

Seems to me there’s a straw purchase going on here -
Unless all pistols were private sales and absolutely no paperwork/checks were needed or done.
And private sales at gun shows are the same as private sales thru newspapers - no checks needed.
The present admin. favors NO PRIVATE SALES or transfers regardless of circumstances. And the only way to control this is registration!!
Further restrictions on gun shows is just another step down that ol’ slippery slope. I for one expect to will my guns to my son - and I’ll fight to keep it that way.
Opps - forgot - lost all those guns in an unfortunate boating accident. Oh well.

Yes. What ABC did was illegal.

Too bad they didn't do it in Georgia, which passed a law a few years back, after that new york mayor and scumbag, bloomberg, sent people all over the country doing "Strawman" purchases and then suing the gun shops. its called the "Bloomberg Law".

If they would've done it in GA they would have been going to big boy prison... bummer!

The lawsuit is still working its way through the system...
