They may be useless idiots, but right now they have the power and are moving in lightning speed to consolidate that power. Every policy initiative so far is designed not to fix the economy or societies ills, but to consolidate power and garner them the instruments of a police state to maintain that power. Ergo the DHS paper released yesterday is a justification for further incremental measures. The first step is to paint moderate conservatives as extremists and radicals that need to be neutered. A police state is looming and I suspect it will be in place long before the "elections" in 2010 which they will win.
Call me paranoid if you will. I saw all this before in Argentina and my parents saw it in Italy and Germany in the 30's. How the nazis and fascists consolidated power makes useful reading, it did not happen overnight but in incremental steps over many months. Stalin used to call them salami tactics, one slice at a time.
