Iran canceled air show when Russia warned Israel planned to destroy all 140 warplanes
DEBKAfile ^ | April 24, 2009 | DEBKAfile

Posted on 04/24/2009 8:08:42 AM PDT by pelican001

DEBKAfile's Iranian and intelligence sources disclose that Moscow warned Tehran Friday April 17 that Israel was planning to destroy all 140 fighter-bombers concentrated at the Mehr-Abad Air Force base for an air show over Tehran on Iran's Army Day the following day. The entire fleet was accordingly removed to remote bases and the display cancelled.

In the first week of April, Tehran announced it would stage its biggest air show ever to dramatize a ceremonial military parade in the capital on April 18. Iran would show the world that it is capable of fighting off an Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities. Instead only four aircraft flew over the saluting stand. Iranian media explained that the big show was cancelled due to "bad weather and poor visibility," when in fact Tehran basked in warm and sunny weather.

Moscow had informed the Iranians that its spy satellites and intelligence sources had picked up preparations at Israeli Air Force bases to destroy the 140 warplanes, the bulk of the Iranian air force, on the ground the night before the display, leaving its nuclear sites without aerial defense. A similar operation wiped out the entire Egyptian air fleet in the early hours of the 1967 war.

“The story is obvious nonsense. The Russians would never warn the Iranians. Never.”

Why?

Russia gets a great deal of money from Iran on trade agreements.

“IDF pulled off a colossal joke”

Consider the intelligence gained by the IAF. Plant this story and make the Iranians bug out. If they didn’t already know where all these aircraft were based, they do now.

It takes a really cunning foe to come up with this kind of military strategy.

I heard next week, their heads of state will cram into a convertible limousine and parade around Tehran for a few hours.

The Iranians are know to “inflate” the number and type of aircraft that they have. In fact they post swiped web pictures of Israeli and even plastic models on their Air Forces web site.

What better way not to have show what they actually have. Blame it on Israel...

If this is true, Netanyahu is seething right now.

No, he is happy. Imagine if Russia warned Iran after the planes were in the air! If true, this is a big boon to Israel that the Russians have tentacles into Mossad or are using advanced electronic intercepts. Israel now has the time to eliminate these leaks, and Iran will be worse off when the real attack comes, as they will be deprived of Russian intel.

Israel gets one shot at this. They aren’t going to be able to destroy the Irainian air force and then strike at their leisure.

Any attack needs to be a combined mission to neutralize the anti-air while knocking out as much of the nuclear infrastructure as possible.

Bombing the air force without an integrated plan is like kicking a hornets’ nest.

Russian spy chief sacked by Medvedev

Apr 24, 2009 10:03 AM

MOSCOW – President Dmitry Medvedev has dismissed the head of Russia’s powerful military intelligence service, the Kremlin said today.

The Kremlin said Medvedev had signed a decree to dismiss Valentin Korabelnikov, a 63-year-old spymaster at the helm of the military intelligence service since 1997. The Kremlin gave no reason for the dismissal.

Alexander Shlyakhturov was appointed as his replacement, it said.

Russia’s military intelligence service, the GRU, is the country’s biggest spy agency, with agents all over the world. It is controlled by the military general staff.

The story is obvious nonsense. The Russians would never warn the Iranians. Never.

If the Iranian Air Force was destroyed on the ground the Russians could make money selling them new planes.

Do the capital letters indicate you are trying to convince us or yourself? It’s Debka. You can’t believe a word from that source alone.

” that there are effective spies for Russia/Iran within the IDF.”

Knowing zer0’s tendencies to crap on our allies, perhaps he tipped the Russians off himself. That’s really gonna tee off the Jewish voters....in...the... U. S.... oh, never mind.

" or, Russia had bad intel and the IDF pulled off a colossal joke "
Or perhaps this was the intended result ? ...
Maybe Israel intended this as a spoof towards Iran to weasel out the moles in the IDF and the Mossad, and the next phase will be the real deal.
