FAA says low-flying plane over Staten Island is 'pre-planned' flight to take photos by Staten Island Advance Monday April 27, 2009, 10:03 AM

A plane, that appears to be a commercial jet tailed by fighter jets, is a "pre-planned" military flight taking photos of the Statue of Liberty, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Reports indicate it may be Air Force One.

"It is pre-planned, pre-coordinated with everyone involved," said FAA spokesman Jim Peters. "It's a military flight over New York to take photos."

Peters, who stressed it is not an emergency, said the flight is circling the Statue of Liberty and New York City to take photos.

Peters said city officials as well as state government agencies in New York and New Jersey were briefed on the flight in advance.

Yeah, right. Professional photogs everywhere much prefer a big, lumbering passenger jet making multiple passes in order to get just the right shot, to a nimble helicopter that can hover in place, for photo shoots.

This "photo shoot" story is BULLSH*T, I say.

Maybe they wanted a pic of the AF-1 flying over the statue of liberty? For an ad about how O is bringing liberty back to our nation?

Our federal government...yelling “FIRE!” in a crowded theater.

Great. Just great.

Reports indicate it may be Air Force One.

Reports also indicate that those reporters making reports wouldn't know AF1 from a Piper Tri-Pacer.

Bottom line; an airplane is taking pictures.

BFD!

Everyone should stop jumping through their ass.

Well, 0bama is such a pompous sort, that this actually makes sense in a sort of way. His minions will photoshop a smiling and waving Bambi in the AF1 window with the statue of liberty in the background. Then I think, couldn’t they photoshop the whole thing. What is this really about?

There is nothing odd about this.

I have seen many patriotic photos of planes flying with The Statue of Liberty below them.

The Thunderbirds and Blue Angels do it, American aircraft manufacturers do it, all sorts of other organizations do it.

The Flyby was authorized and planned, no one did anything wrong, this story is about the nervousness of New Yorkers, which is hardly surprising since 0bama dismantled our defenses against terrorism.

Perhaps they shouldn’t have voted him in.

Maybe they’re taking pictures OF Air Force One and they wanted Statue of Liberty, etc., in the background...

“Very wierd. First, why do they need pictures?...”

So they can remember New York and New Jersey before the holocaust.

The NY Times explains that somebody wanted to take pics of Air Force One flying past the Statue of Liberty. It would have saved money (and panic) to just photo shop it.

The Dow dropped 40 points during the incident.

Well, except they were right this time—that was one of the AF1 birds.

I still want to know why the hell they’d use one of those instead of something smaller, unless the photo op they want is the VC-25 against the New York skyline...in which case, where was the other photo plane? Nobody reported anything but one four-engined jet and two fighter escorts.

RE my post 41 above ... posted before I'd read the thread; apparently the plane itself is the subject of the photo shoot, not the city below. I still maintain that it's bullsh*t, though. Fighter jets would not the the vehicles carrying the photographer/s. It would be a smaller executive Lear-type jet as are used for filming with steadycams. And why would a photog of the Presidential plane with Staten Island as a backdrop include military figher jets on its tail?

This is bullsh*t, I suspect. I wonder what was really going on.

“military flight over New York to take photos”

sounds like bull to me. photos from higher up with a modern zoom lens would be just as good.

Why do they need a propaganda photo of Air Force One with the Statue of Liberty? Frankly, I’m surprised that His Royal Glibness hasn’t ordered the statue sent back to France.

...that appears to be a commercial jet... my shinny metal arse!

That's Air Øbama One!

And my guess is the photos... are to show how the Statue of Liberty will have the face changed to the features of the Øbamanation.

Nope. Helicopters or professionally equipped smaller jets are the vehicles that take pictures. On the other hand, maybe AF1 is the SUBJECT that is being photographed. Even that stinks -- photographers doing the shooting wouldn't be doing it from a fighter jet.

Air Force One Backup Rattles New York Nerves...People came pouring out of the buildings, the American Express Building, all the buildings in the Financial District by the water,” said Edward Acker, a photographer who was at the building, 3 World Financial Center. “And even the construction guys over by 100 North End Avenue area, they all got out of their buildings. Nobody knew about it. Finally some guy showed up with a little megaphone to tell everyone it was a test, but the people were not happy. The people who were here 9/11 were not happy.”

Mr. Acker added, “New York City police were standing right there and they had no knowledge of it. The evacuations were spontaneous. Guys from the floor came out, and one guy I talked to was just shaking.”
