NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Ford Motor said Wednesday it will spend $550 million to convert a plant, which previously produced trucks and SUVs, into a "green" manufacturing complex building small fuel-efficient and electric cars. [snip]

"We're changing from a company focused mainly on trucks and SUVs to a company with a balanced product lineup that includes even more high-quality, fuel-efficient small cars, hybrids and all-electric vehicles," said Mark Fields, Ford's president of The Americas, in a statement.

Kind of a misleading article.

Anybody really believe they’re going to stop making the best selling truck in America?

Most of the Ford trucks are either KansasCity or Dearborn built if I remember correctly.

I believe you’re correct. Ford added a shift at the KC plant a few months back.

Actually Ford is just doing what it is that keeps them successful and following buyer demand.

If I was buying a GREEN CAR....Given a choice between Obama Motors and FORD........I would choose Ford.
We need to send BHOle and his Union thiefs a message ...... you steal from Americans only once.....then we shut you down.

L.O.L......”We’re changing from a company focused mainly on trucks and SUVs to a company with a balanced product lineup that includes even more high-quality, fuel-efficient small cars, hybrids and all-electric vehicles”.....

(translation)...We’re converting from building trucks and SUV’s for rugged independent people to building small, hybrides and all-electric cars for Obama Euro-Weenies!

In any case, a good company has a product lineup that represents what the people want.

And what’s with SUVs for rugged, independent people? I very, very rarely see an SUV that shows any signs of it ever having been off-road. It’s a pleasant surprise when I actually see a big four-wheeler SUV that’s obviously been off-road. Most of them seem to be driven by moms hauling kids and groceries around town. They’re the new minivan, just less efficient.

Kansas City builds the F150 and the Escape right now. They may be getting the small transit van.

I grew up near where Ted Nugent lived and he was way ahead of the curve with the BIG offroad vehicles and they definitely went off road. Mostly Broncos back in those days.

What will the Secret Service drive instead?

Don’t they have Explorers & Suburbans and such?

I guess they’ll have to get Hummers now.

Wasn’t Hummer one of the divisions of GM that 0bama was looking to kill off? Like they did with Pontiac and ultimately the rest of GM.

I like my 06 Explorer. Didn’t Ford add a shift to keep building them due to demand? If I could find a new OD gear so I can crank 1500 RPM and do 65mph, I would be happier with the gpm, or, could they put the CVT transmission in the Explorer to squeeze a few more GPM? Otherwise, it is a great car! I got 18.2mpg going from Chicago to DC, loaded with 4 adults and luggage - no complaints!

Ford is apparently trying to compete with the government. Quick, nationalize them!

Nugent Broncos over the years. He used to drive almost all of these as primary vehicles. He also had a few hot rod lincolns over the years.

Bureaucrats are so much more insightful than mere consumers. We'll all love the same little cars...

Everyone knows that, right?

Didn't the Russians put out a "state car" a few years ago? Wasn't it wonderful? And the McLean burger - seaweed and tofu? Yeah, that went over really well...

I'm sure we'll love driving in little death traps.../s

Great, there will be a demand for resales. Used car businesses just got a bailout!

Rebuilt parts just got one too.
