And he said to them: I saw Satan like lightning falling from heaven.

Liberty vs. tyranny! That was the question at America's founding, and the Founders' decision was for liberty. It was expressed in the founding documents and in their writings.

The underlying principle at the heart of America's constitutional protections, according to Thomas Jefferson, is declared in these words:

"The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time: the hand of force may destroy, but cannot disjoin them."

Life and liberty, therefore, once "endowed" by the "Creator," are inseparable and "unalienable." Thus, the first claim asserted by America's Founders was to an inherent, "Creator-endowed," unalienable and inseparable right to life and liberty which is prior to the right of any other being's determination (including the woman whose body houses the developing child).

If rights came to us by "grants" from individuals or collections of individuals (judges, legislators, or the executive branch), then the consequence of that idea would be that those rights would be "alienable"--an idea in opposition to the Declaration and the Constitution's goal of securing the "Blessings of Liberty."

Hopefully, more and more Americans will come to realize that "ideas have consequences." In the society, once the concept is accepted that life and liberty are not inherent and derived from the Creator, but by permission (grant) of individuals or government, then no person's life and liberty is secure at any point.

The question being highlighted by today's events at Notre Dame is crucial to the preservation of liberty for all citizens--not just those in the womb.

Don’t you know that Barry is a once-in-a-lifetime transformational figure, a bridge to the 7th century, a uniter of all (/sarcasm) religions. Black velvet is smoother than the silky pony would have been, or the course sandpaper-like sociopath of state. Annointed/Endorsed/Enabled BUMP!

media hype,

This is what CBS radio reported this morning, in a sound-byte:

...Obama speaks at Notre Dame...protesting because the Obama abortion policy is at odds with that of former president George Bush and Vatican teaching..."

Whoever cuts and pastes the talking points for the idiot media should learn some finesse.

Separately, I can't see why a Catholic would cite corporations as examples of "enduring institutions." That's so '80's.

As much as some people would like to believe that Father Jenkins can have his cake and eat it too, there is no avoiding the dilemma that one principle will have to take priority over the other. And regardless of which way he goes, he will be criticized; he’ll just need to decide whose criticism matters more

"enduring institutions succeed by adhering to a core ideology, a combination of core values and core purpose. And one of the best ways to tell whether an organization is serious about those principles — and not merely using them as marketing fodder on posters and in brochures — is to see whether the organization will stand by them even in the face of punishment and criticism." The GOP needs to read that book.

The only criticism that should matter to Father Jenkins is God's. It matters a heck of a lot more.

"One choice is the central teachings of the Catholic Church and the school’s reputation of faithfulness to those teachings. The other is the school’s reputation among academia and the media as an elite educational institution open to all points of view."

Inviting obama to speak at Commencement is not the issue. One can object to that as being offensive due to his stance on abortion or think it's a great idea to have the first mixed race President speak to the graduating class. His speaking there doesn't violate flagrantly violate Catholic teachings and by itself wouldn't cause such an outcry.

The issue is giving obama an honorary degree, with a side issue of making the ceremony more about him than about celebrating the students' accomplishments. The honorary degree is the violation. Either Church doctrine means something or it doesn't. Clearly, ND, thanks to Fr. Jenkins, has said it doesn't.

The university has proudly pointed out that the majority of their students were in favor of BO Plenty being honored while the majority of alumni didn’t favor him.

Fine for them. It will be interesting to see how much money they get from these new and nearly complete graduates as opposed to their pool of now PO’d and well off alumni.
