Trebek Makes Bush Joke as Texas Teen Wins Geography Bee

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

WASHINGTON — The nation's top geography whiz breezed through questions about mountain ranges, rivers and world capitals Wednesday, but he was stumped when National Geographic Bee host Alex Trebek asked him to name one of his weaknesses.

"Um ..." said Eric Yang, 13, pausing. The Texas teen had just revealed to the "Jeopardy!" host how he crafts his own chess strategies and plays the piano.

"That's OK," Trebek replied. "You remind me of a former president, but we won't get into that."

Some in the audience at National Geographic's headquarters in Washington gasped. Others laughed. But the joke was on Trebek by the end of the hour as Eric took home the top prize of a $25,000 college scholarship, beating out nine other boys in the finals without missing a single answer.

Poor Alex, he’s getting worse as he gets older. He’s completely convinced that conservatives are evil and liberals are saintly. How sad. Doesn’t keep me from watching Jeopardy every day, though.

Et tu Alex? I was on Jeopardy in 2003. Trebek was a consummate professional (although we did start our first round and he said, “I forgot the answer sheet”).

I’m kind of surprised he’d get political. It’s a lame blow this late in the game. No pun intended.

Where did you get the idea he's a liberal?

From everything I've heard & read, he's very much a conservative.

Trebek translated into Arabic = “don’t step in the camel dung”

I’m sure he was referring to Obama, who once stated that the USA has 57 states.

I am so sick of this Bush bashing! Where is the media when it comes to the numerous blunders by Obama?!? 57 states, bowing to the Saudi king, uh uh uh without his teleprompter, gifting an iPod to the Queen and unplayable dvd's to the prime minister. The list goes on and on. Where are the jokesters on this?

*crickets chirping*

“If the kid said there were 57 states, I wonder if.....nahhhhh.”

No, he would have turned it into a Bush joke like the a$$hole Leno writers: “Obama said there were 57 states . . . and George Bush said, ‘Really?’”

So far, every stupid Obama thing has been turned around on the Leno show to insult Bush by the “ . . . and George Bush said . . . “ insult. I’m so sick of that.
