SEATTLE - The odyssey of Mary Kay Letourneau, which began years ago when she was a 34-year-old teacher who raped a sixth-grade student, has now evolved into "Hot for Teacher" night at a Pioneer Square bar.
But the bar's owner says the event is all in fun, and he hopes people take it in the right spirit.
Letourneau, who eventually served time for raping her former student then later married him after her release from prison, will be hosting the event Saturday at Fuel Sports Eats & Beats on Washington Street.
Letourneau's former student, Vili Fualaau, will be there, too. He'll be the DJ, spinning Top 40 and club classic hits all night.
Fuel's owner, Mike Morris, said he realizes having Letourneau host a "Hot Teacher" night could be touchy and might rub some people the wrong way.
But the way he figures it, "Mary's done her time. She's served her sentence. They're now married; they have kids together."
"It's turned into sort of a love story," he says. "I realize it had a sick twist at the beginning, but they're both adults now. They're both married by the state of Washington. So, it's just go and have fun on a Saturday night - and if people are looking to have some fun, just come check us out."
Morris said this is actually the third time that Letourneau and Fualaau have hosted a "Hot for Teachers" night at the nightclub. The first two events were low-key, and he said patrons really warmed up to the couple.

From the older person’s perspective they should not be looking at anyone under the legal age to give consent for sex. It’s jsut asking for trouble.
Too many teachers look at their students as a sexual smorgasborg menu item that they have every right to indulge in. we need to get a few parents out there that start teaching these teachers a few lessons, so that they never do it again. Just beat the living hell out of them and suggest they resign and find another job in another city, while they can still leave on their own.
I was commenting on your quote at face value.
I learned a lot by following that link. Thanks. Letourneau's father, John Schmitz, was some piece of work. Not everybody has what it takes to be thrown out of the John Birch Society for "extremism." Very funny stuff.
But from my reading of the material, Schmitz's mistress was not "very young." He was 51 and she was 43 when he fathered a second child with her. There may be scandal in an extramarital affair for a hard right culture warrior like Schmitz, but not in an eight year age difference.
“You are duped and being duped...”
Argumentum ad hominum says little for your position in this debate.
My point was based on the fundamental biology of man - there is a difference between male & female.
Is it possible you are actually Secret Liberal Man?
Or Secret Lawyer Man?
;-)
Or, move to France. Just ask Roman Polanski.
I’m kidding, but it could still be true.
There's also a difference between a 13 year-old and a 34 year-old. Thirteen is far too young. At 13, it's rape, no doubt about it.
Sounds like an unrepentant criminal, like Bill Ayers, Pentagon bombing terrorist, or OJ Simpson.
She raped a 13 year old. Justify it however you wish but if it was an adult teacher and a 13 year old girl, you’d probably think differently.
I wonder, if teachers attending an event hosted by a known child predator could face reprisals from their public school employers for attending such an event in the name of sex and romance.
And what is your position on male on male with the same age discrepancies? Or female on female?
“But from my reading of the material, Schmitz’s mistress was not “very young.” He was 51 and she was 43 when he fathered a second child with her.”
My mistake, I read the article fast and just assumed.
I feel really bad for her kids
All six of them.
I’m not justifying anything. I ‘m simply pointing out that there is a difference between statutory rape (sex with someone not legally considered able to consent) and forcible rape (sex with someone who did not consent). This was the former, not the later, so using language like there was some sort of violence is kind if disingenuous.
On male/male sex, I defer to what Moses said was G*d’s position. The most common translation is “abomination”.
Interestingly, the Old Testament has nothing to say about female/female sex.
She is still a child predator and should be treated as such.
If there was no foul then legalize her actions.
