Ida: Separating the Science from the Media Campaign

by Brian Thomas, M.S., and Frank Sherwin, M.A.*

Ida is the nickname of the stunningly well-preserved fossil that is currently being hailed as "our connection with the rest of all the mammals."[1] A massive publicity campaign, including books, videos, a website, and public unveilings, coincided with the publication of a scientific study conducted on the fossil.[2] But published statements from many scientists, both evolutionist and creationist alike, indicate that Ida's accolades as the long-sought-after "missing link" are thoroughly undeserved...

lol, exactly, it didn’t sell on ebay so it’s now on Craig’s list under “missed connections”

Well, let's see... Ida is nada. Lucy is a chimp. Nebraska Man was a pig. Piltdown Man was a fraud.

I'm starting to get bummed here. We're going to have to start updating biology text books every 6 weeks.

Ditto, National Geographic, the “Science” channel, the “Learning” channel, etc.

Maybe they just ought to change their name to Moonbat Propaganda Channel1, 2, 3, etc...

I agree. I just tried to read a copy of Scientific America and I couldn’t believe the crap on that rag. Nothing scientific about it.

LOL...you might want to start by inquiring over at the Temple of Darwin. But they will require a major sacrifice before they let you in on their secrets:

Yes I actually talked to a genetics scientist who was doing DNA research claiming he could map where all our ancestors had been. His theory was that we all came out of Africa, Egypt to be more precise. I said to him, well do you know if they went down to Egypt from someplace else? He said he couldn’t prove it, in fact he couldn’t prove anything. I asked him how Cherokee indians in North America got blonde hair and blue eyes, again no answer. Shoots the whole theory of theirs that they lie about and propagate that only Asians came over on the land bridge but this is the stuff they publish and God help your science career if you go against them

Yet another last, best hope for evolutionism bites the dust. Funny, I predicted it would a few days ago when the circus press attention began.

The only reason I watch those losers is to make a list of all the half-truths, lies and moonbat speculation that they bombard us with instead of actual history.

The only reason I watch the History Channel is because they sometimes have on some cool stuff about tanks.

Seriously, I do enjoy the History Channel most of the time - but that's usually because they confine themselves to actual, uh, history. It's when they try to branch out into science and theology that the HC's deficiencies become apparent.

Here's the ruse:

First you and your good ole boy buds pick some exotic locale you wouldn't mind spending 5-10 years in, get a grant and some funding arranged by your other buds up there in Washington, sign up a few grad students to do all the actual digging and work involved, and hand-pick them so there are at least a few attractive women among them, so when the wife and kids can't come over, you can have some fun, then one day uncover some type of monkey or a few pieces of one, make some extravagant claims to the press and fire up the old publicity machine, get even more money, only now you can get land rovers and hotel accomodations (for you and the female grad students) airplane tickets for wherever you have to go to lecture, stipends, expense accounts, fine dining, book deals, have the grad kids write it up and you put your name on it, and finally get promoted so you never have to do another thing. Any questions?

“I thought “Lucy” was the missing link, I guess they need a new one and guess what! they found it, wow, scientists rock!”

Lucy is “a” link (well, part of a group that’s a link, Australopithecus afarensis) between ape-like creatures and humans (there are other links, it’s not as if it was a one step process).

This fossil (”Ida”) is being touted as a link between lemurs and monkeys. The two events were about 40 million years apart, and so they don’t have much to do with each other. It’s not as if the two fossils are in competition.

Most of the media reports on this are a combination of sad and funny, but this report seems pretty good:
