Surge in Voters Calling Themselves 'Independent' Under Obama

Conservatives are holding their own, while the ranks of independents have skyrocketed since November's presidential election, the latest Pew Research Center poll shows.

The poll of 3,013 adults from March 31 to April 21 found that there had been "no consistent movement away from conservatism, nor a shift toward liberalism" since the election. Republican losses are slowing, the poll found, while Democrats have begun losing ground too.

Thirty-nine percent of adults now call themselves independent.

People identifying themselves as Democrats have slipped from 39 percent in December to 33 percent.

33 percent say they are conservative, up from 26 percent in 2005.

THis is proof that America is moving away from Obama's style of liberalism. Americans don't all want the change he is bringing.

I see it as proof that both parties seem leaderless at the moment. Yes, I think people are realizing that Obama is just another liberal.

Still, there are a lot of people looking for a leader.

Maybe this is the time for a third party to strike.

It ain’t gonna be the Libertarians.

Maybe the Constitution Party?

We JUST need someone as Glenn Beck says, to stand up and embrace COMMON SENSE.

I see Obama's people are listening to those words, as he used them today....darn.

WAKE UP GOP....THIS IS YOURS TO LOSE.

I did a telephone poll about my political affiliation. I identified myself as a conservative independent.

It was a pretty good poll, no questions designed to push the respondent in a certain direction.

I agree with the fact both parties are leader less. Obama is begining to both un-appeal the more centerists and Blue-Dog Democrats and at the same time Republicans as well.

Meanwhile the Republicans don’t have a true conservative voice so people are reluctant to back them.

Go read the numbers yourself. Most of the large increase in Independents is coming out of the GOP’s hide. Principled conservatives are self-identifying as Independent, not Republican.

I don’t doubt it for a moment. My point is simply this, if you’ve seen the movie, “The Life Of Brian” it makes perfect sense. Dancing around with the name of the parties is immaterial unless and until it gets back to libertarian conservatism or western state conservatism people will go nowhere.
People don’t want the government in their wallets or the religious types in their bedrooms. People just want to be left the Hell alone.

Keep what you do in your bedroom out of the public square and we won’t have a problem.

“Independent” is just another way of saying you’re pissed at both parties. It doesn’t necessarily mean that people are becoming more conservative.

Probably a better poll question would be “If your only choices for president were a generic Republican or a generic Democrat, which would you choose?”

I think the best question would be:

How do you define “being a conservative?”

Then, we will know if people actually switched, or if the just like being called conservatives cuz liberal sounds wussy.

It ain't just Obama that's purging the parties - it's the RINO's as well. I'd bet that thousands left the republican party the day after several of them voted in favor of the first bailout. I'd bet that thousands left the democrat party as well, just not as many thousands.

for the record, I left the republican party in 2005 when they kept pushing amnesty and when the party supported the RINO Corker over the conservative Van Hilleary in the Tennessee Senate primary.

Perhaps my heterosexuality isn’t at issue, as your choice of lifestyle doesn’t really affect my life either but that’s not the point. What it really boils down to is who gets to control.
You’re not really conservative. You just want to be able to control what you find distasteful, while not wanting others to control what they find distasteful. I don’t stay up at night thinking that somebody, somewhere is having a good time. You obviously do.

This is the proof that the people who voted for Obama, who have now seen the light, are gutless wonders ... afraid to call themselves democrats who screwed up. Same ‘ol.
