Passer-by Pushes Suicide Jumper in South China (He Got Tired of the Drama)

BEIJING – Chen Fuchao, a man heavily in debt, had been contemplating suicide on a bridge in southern China for hours when a passer-by came up, shook his hand — and pushed him off the ledge.

Chen fell 26 feet (8 meters) onto a partially inflated emergency air cushion laid out by authorities and survived, suffering spine and elbow injuries, the official Xinhua News Agency said Saturday.

The passer-by, 66-year-old Lai Jiansheng, had been fed up with what he called Chen's "selfish activity," Xinhua said. Traffic around the Haizhu bridge in the city of Guangzhou had been backed up for five hours and police had cordoned off the area.

"I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest," Lai was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals."

When I lived out in Washington state, near Tacoma is the Tacoma Narrows bridges which go from Pierce County over into Kitsap Peninsula. There were always these jumpers going on the bridge and hanging on there for hours upon hours, backing traffic up for 20-25 miles. They built another bridge because of all the heavy traffic, the one bridge could not handle it, and when these fools get on there and back up traffic, you are hung for hours. We were hung up past the last turn off once and sat there for over FOUR hours before they opened one lane on each side and closed the other two lanes so they could sweet talk the jumpers.

My husband and I were about 8 miles from Taos, NM on a drive from Colorado to TX a couple of summers ago. I had to go #1 really really bad and when I saw the sign 10 miles to town, I made myself imagine that I didn’t need to go to the bathroom. WELL, we come around the corner and there is a bridge over a canyon and all traffic has to stop! So, for 1 hour we had to wait for some guy to be gently talked off the bridge. I almost had to go to the hospital as there was NO place to relieve myself since it was desert and no cactus over 4 feet!
