Levy Viewed as Way to Reduce Deficits, Fund Health Reform
With budget deficits soaring and President Obama pushing a trillion-dollar-plus expansion of health coverage, some Washington policymakers are taking a fresh look at a money-making idea long considered politically taboo: a national sales tax.

Obama plots raising taxes on the 95% he promised not to, again...
“Do you know how many things that LOOK like they would never pass that have?”
It’s not the Dem style to pass any tax increases they have to own up to. They always get our money through the backdoor, either by inflating the currency or taxing someone else so the cost trickles down and is harder to correlate with the government. Most people have no idea how many taxes they pay as a result of tax costs being passed down to them by large and small businesses. When the price goes up, people blame the vendor for gouging them. If the Dems passed this 15 to 20 percent tax you’d see the cost for everything go up within a day of the bill taking affect. If you bought a car you’d negotiate a price then when you got the invoice there would be that 3 thousand dollars tax added on at the bottom. You’d know exactly where it came from and who did it. Dem’s don’t like facing the music of their actions.
At a White House conference earlier this year on the government's budget problems, a roomful of tax experts pleaded with Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner to consider a VAT. A recent flurry of books and papers on the subject is attracting genuine, if furtive, interest in Congress. And last month, after wrestling with the White House over the massive deficits projected under Obama's policies, the chairman of the Senate Budget Committee declared that a VAT should be part of the debate.
There is a growing awareness of the need for fundamental tax reform," Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) said in an interview. "I think a VAT and a high-end income tax have got to be on the table."
A VAT is a tax on the transfer of goods and services that ultimately is borne by the consumer. Highly visible, it would increase the cost of just about everything, from a carton of eggs to a visit with a lawyer. It is also hugely regressive, falling heavily on the poor. But VAT advocates say those negatives could be offset by using the proceeds to pay for health care for every American -- a tangible benefit that would be highly valuable to low-income families."
It will destroy what manufacturing base there is left in this country as a 10 or 15 percent VAT will add an additional 20-50% on US manufactured goods.
They will present it as our only HOPE and blame Bush when everyones bitches when it hits.
Gee, I thought only the rich making more than $250,000 were going to be taxed more and the rest of us were getting a tax cut...Obama lied and our economy died.
I meant to post the link in post # 6 as this article but when googling could only find the comPOST piece at the time.
Regardless of the demented media, conservatives need to keep the idea of a 10% sales tax and abolition of income tax and the IRS on the table.
“By the time the 2010 elections come around the Dims will have the US so wrapped up in communism that the sheeple will not allow the probable new Republican majority to correct the course of the vehicle before it runs over the ledge. They will be so attached to the scraps (freebies) that Obama tosses to them.”
2010 will be the largest case of voter fraud in the history of humankind.
A new sales tax? that’s one way to guarantee this recession turns into a depression.
Oh Yeah!! A national sales tax right along with the income tax.......I can see them lickin their lips and rubbing their hands. Well they can just rub “THIS” and “LICK” that.
They’ll have a tax revolt that mama always warned’em about
It’s amazing.
Most are surprised by this.
We’re still watching the previews. The feature has yet to begin.
These are not liberals, folks.
And until something is done, every election that follows
The names may change, but the marxism will remain the same.
exactly.
but I guess those idiots still think this won’t hit those making under $250K
Looks like cap and tax ain’t going to fly now we are onto a VAT tax?
But, but what about the 95% of us that were gonna get a tax break?

Remember how the media would always talk about Reagan taking a "fresh look" at tax cuts?
Neither do I.
And will welfare recipients be exempt? Will they carry special exemption cards? And how much will they charge non-exempt people to buy flat screen TVs for them?
Look for the underground economy to boom.....big time.
