Left Out of D-Day Events, Queen Elizabeth Is Fuming
New York Times ^ | May 27, 2009

Queen Elizabeth is not amused.

Indeed, she is decidedly displeased, angry even, that she was not invited to join President Obama and France’s president, Nicolas Sarkozy, next week at commemorations of the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, according to reports published in Britain’s mass-circulation tabloid newspapers on Wednesday. Pointedly, Buckingham Palace did not deny the reports.

The queen, who is 83, is the only living head of state who served in uniform during World War II. As Elizabeth Windsor, service number 230873, she volunteered as a subaltern in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service, training as a driver and a mechanic. Eventually, she drove military trucks in support roles in England.

While serving, she met the supreme Allied commander for the D-Day landings, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, and developed a fondness for him, according to several biographies. This prompted Queen Elizabeth, who was crowned in June 1953, to say in later years that he was the American president with whom she felt most at ease.

But on June 6, when Mr. Obama and Mr. Sarkozy attend commemorations at the iconic locations associated with the American D-Day assault — Utah Beach, the town of Ste.-Mère-Église, where the first United States paratroopers landed, and the American war cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer — the highest-ranking British representative will be Prime Minister Gordon Brown. His main role will be at ceremonies at the town of Arromanches, near the beaches where British troops landed.

How the queen came to be excluded has become entangled in a thicket of diplomatic missteps, or misunderstandings, depending on whether the account is given in London or Paris.

There will come a day when Iraq will honor the sacrifices of Americans and its allies for liberating them from Saddam.

It is almost like she was born to rule over common people, what American can’t support that concept.

I guess I do, this is a slight and not deserved. Hussein seems to go out of his way to piss off the Brits.

In all fairness, this gaffe isn't Obama's doing. He's a guest at Sarkozy's event. The blame lies with the French for not inviting Queen Elizabeth, and maybe with Gordon Brown, the British PM, for not making it clear to the French that she expected to attend.

It's got to make her sick to see what's become of Britain.

Abraham Lincoln, but that’s not the point. Obambi sent it BACK to the UK - he didn’t put it in another location in the White House, or send it to the Smithsonian - no, he purposely wanted to send a “message”.

The thought of Obama on Omaha beach is a repugnant insult to the memory of the men who died here. Perhaps the heir to Hitler is uncomfortable with the Queen who fought his progenitor.

She is tougher and smarter than Obama or any current European head of state by a country mile.

That's not saying much, but considering what the royal family did for their nation in WWII, she should've been invited. What the heck has Barry got against QEII?

I certainly hope that is true but seriously have my doubts now. If Iran moved across the border would we do more than just accelerate our retreat? We'd be told by Obama that like Korea, it just isn't that important.

0 only bows and pays homage to Muslim royalty. We all know where his loyalties lie. It is disgraceful and hypocritical that he is any part of a D-Day observance to begin with.

Amen to that. She served her country in WWII when she could have relocated to Canada, or just stayed at home. But she didn't, she served. Her husband served honorable in the Royal Navy.

Zero does not deserve anything but contempt.

She may be old and rich (neither a crime) but she’s not stupid. And she served in the war — it’s an outrage.

How come the Queen Mum doesn't just hold a celebration of her own for Brit citizens at Dover and/or at select port launch points?
Bet it'd draw more people than the ingrate French.

She is an old , stupid, rich white lady.

She also is a veteran of the British Army, having served in the British Army at the time of the event being commemorated.

What's your claim to fame??

Grace, dignity, and a mechanic besides! Too bad we can’t elect her, she and Sarah would make quite a ticket!

The original poster was being sarcastic and simply stating what a liberal loon would say about the Queen.

OK, I for one did not take your comment seriously and expect you were projecting what you thought Obama or somebody thinks by not inviting her. If I'm wrong I apologize for giving you the benefit of the doubt and I'll pile on about the Queen's virtues... even though she did give birth to and raise Charles. ;-)
