Texas balks at Hollywood take on Waco tragedy

Saying movie twists facts, Film Commission denies it a state rebate, but filming will go on

Movie producer Emilio Ferrari vowed last week to move ahead with his $30 million screen depiction of the deadly 1993 clash between federal agents and Branch Davidian cultists, even though the Texas Film Commission says the project could taint Texas’ image and is unworthy of taxpayer support.

The movie, Waco, would be the first feature-film treatment of the 51-day federal siege of David Koresh’s Central Texas compound that led to the death of four federal agents and more than 80 cult members.

Ferrari, whose production credits include Baby on Board, starring Heather Graham, called the incident the “nation’s biggest tragedy, after 9/11.”

“And this was by Americans against Americans,” he said. “It’s been completely swept under the rug. I think people have a right to know what happened. I’m not a political guy at all. I’m making a story from every point of view.”

The Texas Film Commission’s director, Bob Hudgins, said the movie would not be eligible for a state rebate of up to 15 percent on in-state production costs because the movie doesn’t “accurately portray Texans.” In language creating the stipend, lawmakers specified that Film Commission grants should be denied movies that distort facts to make Texas look bad.

It’s about time someone shined the light on this Clinton fiasco. Regardless of your opinion on the Branch Davidians, those people could have been left alone to no harm,or picked up on their way to Wataburger on Sunday morning. BUT, the local coppers had new toys to play with and wanted to be sheriff/soldiers for some kicks.
I’ll never forget watching this stupid fiasco on the local news. “Stay off the roof” was all I could say as the guys climbed up only to be shot with high power rifles zipping through the thin plywood they were standing on.......

OK Freepers: Who would you cast to play Janet Reno? John Lithgow (World According to Garp) would be a good choice. Abe Vigoda is also a possibility.

Doesn’t sound as if this guy is approaching the story from the wrong angle. The man who made the documentary “Waco: Rules of Engagement” contributed to the making of the movie.

What I would really love to see is a Michael Moore-style documentary/celebrity-pursuit of former FBI sniper Lon Horiuchi, who played a bloody role at Ruby Ridge and apparently at Waco as well.

It seems he still works for the gummint. And amazingly, no one can find a photo of this man less than twenty years old.

Who will play Koresh? I think Johnny Depp would be perfect.

We can be sure they’ll mention the fact the four federal agents killed were all former Clinton bodyguards, too. And the only ones there, I believe, by yet another amazing coincidence.

Don't forget Ruby Ridge or the Montant Freemen.

These types of people would be content living in their compounds and bunker miles from society and they would never bother anyone. Also remember Ruby Ridge was about 1 sawed off shotgun.

The re-write was to have George W. Bush igniting the compound from the inside... < /sarc>

(and in case anyone gets the wrong idea, Bush was not governor during the Waco incident. It was Democrat Ann Richards. Bush was then a private citizen running the Texas Rangers baseball club into the ground.)

I don't know if Abe Vigoda is alive or dead, but either way he'd be a great Janet Reno.

Iirc, The Montana Freemen were involved in issuing securities they did not redeem (fraud). That is what got them in trouble. Iirc, no one got killed in that one.
