TV host David Letterman has been criticised for making "sexually perverted" comments and "rape jokes" about Sarah Palin's teenage daughter.

The former vice presidential candidate hit back after he called her "slutty" and appeared to suggest her 14-year-old child slept with a baseball star.

Letterman, the host of The Late Show on CBS, told his audience Mrs Palin looked like a "slutty flight attendant" on a trip to New York.

The Alaskan governor was there for a baseball game and to be honoured by a special needs group, accompanied by Willow, 14.

You're getting what I was thinking. To me, he was "joking" that, like the mother being a 'library slut', the daughter is a Lolita whore....not that this Rodriguez person is a violent, out of control rapist.

In either case, you're correct...the "joke" was utterly repugnant.

Time to send best wishes back to these sicko’s such as “ I hope your testicles grow painfully infected and fall off Letterman.”

I'm not defending the ass but, I don't see where he ever implied "rape". How does a thirty-something year old pro ball player have sexual relations with a 14 year old out of towner during a ten minute break in a ball game in a way that does not make it a rape? Are you in the habit of consenting to sex with strangers during ten minute breaks at baseball games? Even if you are (YUCK!), could 14 year old Willow give that consent?

my point is, i am more concerned about the MIDDLE than left or right, because this was offensive enough to non-political types [mom and pop regular joe in middle america] so as to maybe open some eyes about how horrible the left is.

Your words:

"I'm not defending the ass but, I don't see where he ever implied "rape"."

So again, how does a thirty year old pro ball player have sex with a 14 year old out of towner he's never met, during a ten minute break in a game, and it's not rape?

What planet do you live on, where this is not rape?

Yeah, good points. Seems like after the heart surgery he started taking himself seriously. That or he realized he was getting skunked by Leno and had to pick a new tact. He just comes across as old and bitter now.

I found a few clips from the early 80’s show on youtube, and it’s an amazingly different show.

However, I did have the distinct pleasure of dining at the Hello Deli last summer, and Rupert G. is still a nice guy. Food was surprisingly good too, and about half the price of nearby places.

They made a conscious choice to change the show, because of the earlier time slot. I watched it when it debuted, but couldn’t roll with it. The great vibe was gone. Conan basically became the old Letterman show (although I didn’t watch his show either.) Basically, I quit watching those shows after Carson-Letterman left NBC.

Suppose this had been Dave's 'joke':

"One awkward moment for the President at the Yankee game," Letterman then quipped on-air. "During the seventh inning, Michelle was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez."

That wouldn't just be not funny. A comment like that would have the papers howling for Letterman's head. And while I like neither, I would expect a grovelling apology as the minimum price for keeping his job.

I’m a Conan fan, but I’m wondering how much he’s going to change with the earlier timeslot. He basically replaced Letterman for me after the change.

It’s probably a whole different crew of writers also. It’s been 20 yrs or so since the old Late Night w/ Dave show. The newer crop of writers are most likely younger, and hence, more devolved. In my view, our culture is on a steady, consistent path of de-evolution.

I'm not defending the ass but, I don't see where he ever implied "rape". Unless "knocking up" means something different in NY than it does on the west coast.

An underage child CANNOT consent to sex with an adult, so if she were "knocked up" by an adult, rape is defacto.

maybe that’s the difference xsmommy - some freepers here have daughters and some do not.\

Some FReepers seem to think there is a big difference between rape and statutory rape.

i think that you are correct. i don’t think a man with a young daughter hears that joke in the same way as single or childless men do.

“IMO, they probably didn’t know which daughter was there, and didn’t care.”

YOu are wrong they didn’t know - it was put into print for anyone willing to read.
I agree they didn’t care. All that matters is that Willow is a “Palin”.
And in the world of liberal entertainment that makes her fair game regardless of her age.

“They were trying to combine two current events—Palins at a ballgame, and Arod being a scandal-magnet”

Yes - it was that, but it was also more.
The left wing media is intent on bringing Sarah down.
They will use any means possible.
So the meme they want to promote is “white trash”.
So the notion that a Palin daughter would quickly get down and dirty w/ A-Rod during a game is “funny” to them.
It also gets the audience - and hopefully America - to laugh at those stupid redneck Palins that keep breeding like bunnies. This is the leftist “story” of the Palins.

You are probably right he didn’t exactly mean to make a joke about statutory rape, but that doesn’t excuse him from the fact that he DID make a joke about statutory rape.

In their blind hatred of the Palin family they messed up big time and should not get a pass.

The left wing media is intent on bringing Sarah down.

I think the avg liberal weenie doesn't think Sarah needs to be brought down. They think she's already down. I don't think they are on a mission to make people think she's a joke. I think they think she's a joke. To them, she's the Britney Spears of politics. A jokey celebrity who makes great fodder for laughs. I really don't think it's a conspiracy. I think it's just what they believe. They think she's a joke. That's all there is to it.

As for the joke, I don't think it's as complicated as a "notion that a Palin daughter would quickly get down and dirty w/ A-Rod". I think it was much simpler than that. I think they saw in the news that Palins were at a Yankee game, and since they like making Palin jokes, they wanted to make a Palin joke about being at the game. They made a joke about the daughter getting knocked up, because the Palins have a daughter who got knocked up. End of story. It's just supposed to be a cheap laugh.

All this stuff about rape is, imo, misplaced, but there I go not taking my own advice and leaving it alone. It doesn't bother me if ppl want to hassle Letterman about it.

Now I'm sitting here thinking....if I were joke writer, and needed to write a Palins at Yankee Stadium joke....

Hey did you hear the Palins were at the New Yankee Stadium the other night? Apparantly, the tickets cost almost as much as Palin's wardrobe! (rimshot)

Yeah, I know, the wardrobe thing is another farce, but it's in the public zeitgeist. That's how these kind of jokes work. The joke has to reference something the average dolt will recognize and understand.

The knocked up thing is just supposed to be a quick punch in the nose kind of joke. Just silly. That's my take on it. But hey, whatever.

So it's okay to joke about one daughter being raped but not the other? Did I miss something?

According to Letterman, it is okay to joke about Bristol getting knocked up by A-rod because "Bristol was the daughter who WAS knocked up"....

And the liberal media defends him.....disgusting.

Remember the Don Imus episode? Letterman should have his show canceled as well ... immediately.
That casts you in the role of Al Sharpton. As long as you're comfortable with that.

So you're implying my response that Letterman should be canceled for his outrageous remark concerning Palin & her daughter vis a vis Don Imus and his faux pas ranks me with Al Sharpton? Whatever pal ... your logic frankly sucks.

Don Imus was kicked off his show because he got a ghetto beatdown from Al Sharpton and the race pimps. At the time, I didn't think Don Imus should have been kicked off his show or hassled at all. Did you?

So to me, if you say Letterman should be treated the way Imus was treated, that means you think the way Imus was treated was correct and fair. Hence, you agree with Al Sharpton on the matter. I personally didn't think it was a big deal. I think people should be able to make crude jokes in a free country.

Criticism is fine. Knock Imus for making crude jokes all you want. Same goes for Letterman. And the left is free to knock Rush or Hannity or whoever they feel like criticizing. And free people will judge for themselves about it. That's how I think it should go.

But I understand it's an issue of gang warfare. You whack one of mine, I whack one of yours. Tit for tat. I get it. (Not that I consider Imus one of ours.) I understand the argument. Do unto others as they do unto you, basically. It's not tiddlywinks, etc. I get it.

But I'm not interested in trying to get people kicked off the air because of a disagreeable joke. Where does that end? It just seems like more political correctness to me, although I think it's actually more like retribution.

Some might argue Dave's got himself too mixed up in politics to avoid this fight. That's probably true. To the extent that he put himself in the political fight, he made himself a target. That's what this is about. It's about getting a liberal scalp. I'm not wise enough to say that's right or wrong. There's a case for bare knuckled fighting. I'm just Joe Blow watching from the bleachers.
