Senate Backs Apology for Slavery
Washington Post ^ | 6/20/2009 | Krissah Thompson

The Senate unanimously passed a resolution yesterday apologizing for slavery, making way for a joint congressional resolution and the latest attempt by the federal government to take responsibility for 2 1/2 centuries of slavery.

"You wonder why we didn't do it 100 years ago," Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), lead sponsor of the resolution, said after the unanimous-consent vote. "It is important to have a collective response to a collective injustice."

The Senate's apology follows a similar apology passed last year by the House. One key difference is that the Senate version explicitly deals with the long-simmering issue of whether slavery descendants are entitled to reparations, saying that the resolution cannot be used in support of claims for restitution. The House is expected to revisit the issue next week to conform its resolution to the Senate version.

There is still slavery in the Sudan. Black on black slavery. If these black people really cared about the issue of slavery they would want to end what is going on in the Sudan. Apparently an apology to them is worth more than the enslavement of fellow black people.

To be blunt, if the black community ever wants to achieve true equality, then a very big first step would be to stop portraying themselves as victims.

What most never seem to understand about slavery, is that the vast majority of slaves throughout history were captives of conflicts. If there had been no financial incentive to keep them, they would of just been slaughtered, which is what happens today in places like Rwanda.

Personally, if I was on the losing end of a war and had the option of living as a slave or being executed on the spot, I'd have chosen life. I understand that some, possibly many would choose death, but is it really more humane to outlaw slavery than to remove the hope of the defeated to at least continue to live, even as slaves?

No surprise that Harkin, the Vietnam fighter Pilot Liar, is in the middle of this farce.

You wonder why we didn't do it 100 years ago,

Because back in 1861 we apologized for it at a cost of more lives lost than all other wars fought by this country before or since. Hows that for an apology Senator Harkin?

If the Democrats pass any legislation giving cash reparations to blacks as payment for slavery that will result in the immediate death of the Democratic Party.

Don’t be so sure about that. The same thing could have once been said for Gay Marriage or any manner of idiocy. The fact is that once these loony ideas have been around for sufficiently long, they tend to get adopted. They better watch it on this issue though.

Maybe we should do it to finally to shut off the debate give each former slave $1,000,000,000.”

I'd be all for that, every 150 year old ex slave line up at the White House and have Barry write them out a check.

I have never owned a slave. Nor would I want to.

I have nothing to apologize for.

Yup. It'll make the billions of dollars that ACORN has stolen look like chump change.

The apology would have been more historically accurate if it had mentioned the role of the Democratic Party in supporting and enforcing both slavery and segregation.

Send the reparations bill to the DNC.

“Democrats still practice the ancient tradition of father’s sin becomes the son’s sin”

Not exactly. You see, the Democrats were the party that supported both slavery and Jim Crow.

Actually...the Constitution prevents Congress passing crimes through bloodlines.

Of course, now that we have a wise Latina woman on the Court I can see reparations being upheld 5-4.

My ancestors fought to free the slaves. I’m holding out for a ‘thank you’ from the slaves descendants...

Frankly, I think the only apology needed was given during the Civil War.

So descendants of those who fought and died fighting for the Union have to apologize for slavery?

So the majority of the country descended from immigrants who came here after the Civil War have to apologize for something they nor their ancestors had a part of?

The current Dems are total buffoons...of course we all here know that.

We're all becoming slaves to the government. The productive part of society, that is.
