USS John McCain: The destroyer has been deployed to intercept a North Korean vessel suspected of carrying illicit weapons

The U.S. military is planning to intercept a North Korean ship suspected of carrying illicit nuclear materials and missiles.

Navy destroyer the USS John McCain has been deployed to intercept the Kang Nam as it leaves the coast of China, according to a senior US defence official.

The ship, which left a port in North Korea on Wednesday, appears to be heading towards Singapore.

Its suspected cargo is in violation of a UN Security Council resolution passed last Friday, and it is now being constantly monitored by air.

The Kang Nam is the first ship the U.S. has tracked from North Korea since the UN imposed sanctions following the country's recent nuclear test.

The resolution bans North Korea from exporting a wide range of weaponry - but does not allow the US to forcibly board the vessel.

Instead, they would have to ask for permission - which, in all likelihood, would not be granted.

North Korea has already stated that any attempt to board its ships without permisson would be viewed as an act of war.

It promised '100- or 1,000-fold' retaliation if provoked.

The latest tension follows a recent report in Japan's Yomiuri newspaper that North Korea may fire a long-range ballistic missile toward Hawaii in early July.

The Taepodong-2 missile has a range of 4,000 miles, but even though Hawaii is 4500 miles away, the US has already deployed anti-missile defences around the state.

A 8,400 ton ship is not a life boat. It is also almost twice as large as the orginal Type 42 Destroyers used by the British. The newest British destroyers, the Type 45 "Darings" are stil 23% lighter than the Flight IIA a Arleigh Burkes at 9,300 Tons. They also only have 48 VLS tubes, compared to the 96 tubes on the Arleigh Burkes.
To put this in perspective, the current British Invincible "carriers" are glorified cruisers weighing in at 17,000 tonns, or about twice the size our our destroyers.

Especially when you realize the margin of victory in some states maipulating the electoral college. His treachery began as early as Iowa. He got the unexpected win from his brigades coming to the same day caucuses.

He continue his treachery by packing the repub votes in new hampshire with “independents” giving us McCain.

Obamas win is a very technical treachery, done by manipulating a caucus-heavy democrat approach, with zealots who built a small cult. And his photo everywhere still creeps me out.

"McCain to cross aisle in bipartisan compromise"

I'll say this: It's nice to see something named "McCain" on the opposite side of a hostile alien confrontation for a change.

While I’m tempted to make a crack or two about the likely attributes of a ship named after John McCain, I won’t out of respect for her crew. They can’t help it their ship has such a crappy name.

Outside of nuclear warheads, only in your dreams, does this vessel have greater destructive power than a battle ship.

The missiles have greater range.

the destroyer has limited missiles.

Most of the destroyer’s warheads carry less than a ton of HE if I’m not mistaken.

A BB can hurl HE warheads which weigh as much a a vw 26
miles all day. And the MO upgrades installed vertical launch missile tubes as well I beleive.

I don’t think it would fire a shot. We wouldnt even sink or recapture the USS Pueblo a few years ago. The Norks towed it from their east coast to the west. They completely rounded the Korean penninsula in international waters!

And today there are SERIOUS issues before we shoot at it.
Under Obama, We would accept impact, then *possibly* retaliate. I mean, how do we KNOW a warhead is even on it, it might just be a test. And how would we like it if someone shot at OUR test missile headed towards Kwajalien? And besides, do we think we OWN the whole Pacific? Thats a zone reserved for the UN!

I almost believe they could hit Oahu, claim it was a mistake, and Obama wouldn’t shoot back. He won’t ever shoot a socialist comrade brother.

The ship is named after the Senator’s admiral father, who was commander of pacific forces in Vietnam, and his admiral grandfather, who was on the Missouri when Japan surrendered and passed away immediately after returning home from the war.

The Titantic. Too big for its own good. Reputation based only on press hype, not on substance. Destined to sink.

Bubba sent Jimmy Carter to visit with millions in free food and then Albright with a Michael Jordan signed basketball.

Following the democrats previous policies, and given Obama’s talent for gifts, I would assume he would send Hillary Clinton to visit them with a box of Wheat Thins and a Bob Uecker signed baseball.

The Iowa class was harpoon firing and nuclear armed at its last configuration. And harpoons are nice, but the McCain would be very limited in fire support, as in Lebanon in the early 80s. The New Jersey pounded em for days.

True but you just said 16” guns first, and we haven’t made a battleship since the mid 2oth century. They had to upgrade the battleships to be more like a modern destroyer because they would have been sunk by Harpoons from alot further away than the 26 miles a 16” shell would travel.

Yeah. I hear ya. Great Americans.

But what Shakespeare said of mothers is also true of fathers.

True but an Arleigh Burke DDG and an Iowa BB have extremely different missions.

The DDG is primarily an AAW platform while a BB is used to pound dirt or other unfortunate surface vessels. The DDG’s best defenses are it's sensors and weapons while the BB relies on armor.

Put the two together and that's when it gets beautiful. I miss the SAGs lead by and Iowa BB.
