URGENT: Use Twitter to help Iranian protestors.
Americans supporting Iranian liberty & those fighting for it ^ | June 19, 2009 | Jeff Head

Posted on 06/19/2009 10:26:09 PM PDT by Jeff Head

I just got this note from another poster and twitter on the Americans supporting Iranian liberty & those fighting for it site on Facebook.

This is pertinent right now to the situation in Iran.

Twitter Folks-set your location to Tehran and your time zone to GMT +3.30. Iranian security forces are hunting for bloggers using location/timezone searches. The more people at this location, the more of a logjam it creates for forces trying to shut Iranians' access to the internet down.

We have to help protect the Freedom Fighters.
Please pass the word. There are ways we can help. This is one of those ways.

Awesome picture there! Very reminiscent of the Tiananmen Square photo of the woman blocking the tanks! Let’s pray that tomorrow’s rally doesn’t end as another Tiananmen!

I do not think so. I think twitter has plenty of bandwidth...it’s just the more we fill it up with posters who are “located” there, the harder it will be for the Iranian Islamic Tyranny agents to find the protestors.

Yes, if you are using Twitter on your computer just type in at the box at the top and hit “update” and that sends out a “tweet”

You may also want to use this as your search on Twitter...”#iranelection” For the past couple of days this has been the most active trend on Twitter to follow the Revolution.

I have been following this since the election and it’s amazing to get info in real time.

The top trending topic to get info from the ground is:
#IranElection

You can follow on your cell or computer. Get real time photos and video links on you tube. Also beware you will read tweets that are spam or pro obama, dont rant cause you’ll just get shouted down.

If you do plan to tweet DO change the time zone to Iran if you are just watching there is no need to.

How long will it be until Iran takes down Twitter? And how will it be, denial of service attack, or death threats to the Twitter officers?

Let’s start a pool.

I’ve joined a couple of days ago to help out. Made the mistake of clicking on a link which was supposed to be awesome pics of protest. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen. Please beware and careful of clicking on links. I will never do it again.

Understood...always be careful. Sorry that happened to you...but simple tweeting with your location and time set to Tehran time, can be done with little such risk.

I agree completely. The reason I suggested earlier using mobile phones to tweet, and I completely defer here to the more tech savvy, is that I give the Iranian Interior Ministry IT a bit of credit(assuming they have blocked most Iranian IPs except for proxies being thrown in as things unfold) and believe that if they see a lot of tweets coming in during the midst of the protests showing as having been tweeted “from the web” (instead of from “twitterific, twitterfon, etc) they will ignore those right away.

The only other suggestion I might give would be if we wanted to help with any type of disinformation campaign to confuse the IIM would be to make sure that Freepers tweets during the protests weren’t simply outside messages of support in English. Rather, make them appear as if they were emanating from within the protest themselves, which may grab monitors attention much more quickly, and thus divert them away from the “real” protesters messages.
