Peanut Butter 'Wards Off Heart Disease'
UK Daily Mail ^ | 4:50 PM on 25th June 2009

Peanut butter sandwiches, favoured by cartoon character Charlie Brown, could be the secret to beating heart disease, according to new research.

A study in the US reveals snacking on peanuts or peanut butter at least five days a week can nearly halve the risk of a heart attack.

A team of experts at Harvard Medical School in Boston came up with the findings after studying the eating habits of thousands of women with type two diabetes.

The condition dramatically increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Poor diet and lifestyle has led to a surge in the numbers affected by type two diabetes in the UK, up from 1.5 million five years ago to 2.25 million.

The latest findings, published in the Journal of Nutrition, support earlier studies on the cardiovascular benefits of peanuts and peanut products.

But it is believed to be the first study showing major clinical benefits in such a high-risk group.

In a report the researchers said: 'Peanuts are low in saturated fat and high in mono and polyunsaturated fats, which have been shown to lower LDL cholesterol.'

LDL cholesterol is the 'bad' form of blood fat known to increase the dangers to the heart.

But the researchers said peanuts and peanut butter could also be helping by reducing inflammation in the body, or boosting the health of blood vessels around the heart.

The team analysed the diets of more than 6,000 women who took part in the Nurses Health Study, a long-running investigation into female health trends which began back in 1976.

I don’t normally buy frozen waffles but they are very good toasted with peanutbutter on them. Very good as a run out the door breakfast!

If you have Diabetes, the big news out right now is that you *have* to regularly take Vitamin B-1. This is huge news for diabetics, and the word needs to get out.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6935482.stm

“Researchers found people with the disease expelled thiamine - vitamin B1 - from their bodies at 15 times the normal rate in a study of 94 people.

The Warwick University team said thiamine helped ward off complications such as heart disease and eye problems, the Diabetologia journal said. “

Never worried about it to begin with.

Been eating PB straight out of the jar for years.

Still here, and still plan on doing it.

My BS meter is twitching.
OK, I gotta ask. Who paid for the study?

When I was in my early twenties, I had the lowest total cholesterol and best HDL/LDL ratio of anyone my doctor had ever seen. But he asked me what the hell I was doing because my other blood lipids were through the roof. He made me cut my peanut butter consumption by 3/4 and they went back to normal while keeping my good HDL/LDL levels.

I guess when it doesn’t give you ecoli...it’s just great...lol. Of course, the study could be preparing us all for a diet made of mostly peanut butter since that’s all we will be able to afford after Obama steals our money.

It’s back to the college days of peanut butter and ramin noodles for all!

Mixing peanut butter with barbiturates while wearing one’s blue suede shoes causes a fatal reaction leading to the dreaded “commode code blue”.

Regular Consumption of Nuts Is Associated with a Lower Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in Women with Type 2 Diabetes

FReepmail me if you want on or off the diabetes ping list.

FFQ meas food frequency questionaire, IIRC. Thanks to Obama and the tort lawyers, who will not be affected by any reform of health care in the near term, watch out for peanut allergies in everbody else.

N.B. Check the effects on the nurses' lipid profile.

It is one of the ingredients in my 'health shake':

One large banana
Five ice cubes
Eight ounces of skim milk
Two heaping tablespoons of smooth peanut butter
1/2 cup of One minute Oats, uncooked
Blend on high until the ice cubes stop crackling. You can substitute Wheat Cheks for half of the Oats, but the oats are vital to intestinal health. You can add two scoops of cappacino powder before blending, unless you're diabetic. Enjoy this three or four times per week, as breakfast.
