As a result of decreasing literary skills, college textbooks are being rewritten at a lower grade level so that the students can understand them. Most newspapers and magazines are written at about a sixth grade level which is now the reading level of the average American (of which I'm one). If you aren't buying this - compare the literacy level of today with early America, read the Federalist Papers, which were written for farmers and other common citizens in New York. Today's college graduates find them difficult.

This is an interesting seeties that I think highlights much of what’s going on today. We are a nation of idiots. It has beenm done on purpose and we have got to find a way to reverse this and educated ur young people about what’s going on in their world! This has three part to the series. Very eye-opening.
In a lot of places America no longer has a public education system. What we have is a public day care and political indoctrination system run by and for the benefit of the teachers unions so that mommy can go to work every day without having to worry where the kids are most of the time.

Sure they have. And you see it by the way that people move when they acquire enough money to buy into a particular school district. But it’s not something you’re ever *allowed* to say.
Immigration, poor birth rates by whites and Asians, and massive birth rates combined with a piss-poor emphasis on educaiton by the black and Hispanic community are killing our nation.
When graduating from our pathetic public education system is seen as an accomplishment and something above the norm, something is horrendously amiss.

I tried to read the article but it was too hard and I gave up.
It’s no wonder the kids are dumb when the teachers and administration are also getting dumber. When I taught in an inner-city school, the principal told a story about how she and the other principals were assigned to read a certain non-fiction best-seller over the summer. She said it was too hard for them. So, they got the book on tape. She said that was also too hard to listen to.
In other words, a corral with a herd of dumb animals. And the taxpayers support it. Most of them defend it and even submit their children to it.
Written by a NY State Teacher-of-the-Year, this is the only book that really matters. And you can read it for free, on-line.

I agree with you. Strong discipline is clearly missing in our public schools. They state a “zero tolerance” policy, however the reality is that students are given on campus detention. Follow the money trail! Administrators don’t or won’t toss troublemakers out, and the vicious cycle begins.

This is such a concern. Hitler said “Give me the children, I will give you a nation”.
This has happened here. I just hope it’s not too late to reverse. Debt is bad....but not compared to a public made up of unthinking morons.
I will offer this analysis, after having spent the last fifteen years in Europe.
We are wasting tons of money and resources...teaching kids beyond the 8th grade. You can pretty much pick out the kids who ought to be given a trade background at 14...give them a 3-year educational package and then graduate them by 17. The other group...call them the smarter kids...but actually sit there and challenge them. Toss philosophy, logic, Greek history, and business management at these kids by age 15 and 16. If they pass a general knowledge test by 17...to graduate them and push them onto college. Entice them with the entire first year of college tuition being covered by the state (but you have to attend the local college nearest your home).
The real problem with American education is that we are tossing the sports issue into the whole mess. We are allowing various punk kids with no real education to pass by high school...cheapening the entire process. The teachers and the administration folks are contributing to this by letting these guys test and “pretend” to pass well enough to graduate.
Then we come to the university problem...where more sports figures use the whole process and then they pretend to get a education...when they can barely read or understand basic logic. It’s like a minor league of basketball or football, which we’ve allowed to develop.
Finally, we’ve accepted the idea of creating huge departments in universities...where a imaginary field of knowledge has been created. Duke operates a major department now with African, and African-American studies. You’ve got various colleges who’ve turned Earth studies into some 1-star science class...and giving us a bunch of dimwits with no true science background.
I could write an entire book about how to fix this...but the truth is that the public and the school system really don’t want the fix.
The government (NEA) run education department and program are not for the purpose of teaching, kids or otherwise.
There sole purpose is to give the NEA a straw into the public's coffers, kids be damned.
A few years ago in California, anyone who wanted to work as a substitute teacher could take the CBEST. This test was on multiple subjects and at the eigth grade level. I was suprised that several people I knew had to retake that test in college. Amazing!
Education must go back to grass roots and concentrate on the three Rs. While I agree in part to what you said...the fact is we are coddling these kids and not demanding their achievement. In the past almost 100% of early American kids were literate. I am afraid to know what it is now.
We need institutions with absolute authority...where it is a priviledge to be educated...not a right. We MUST force the train back on the tracks. The American public wants good for their kids. If not, the Demofrauds couldn’t keep raising spending in that area. The public just has no real undrstanding of how bad the education is that is being foisted on their children compared to past.
