Sarah Palin makes a play for Democrat votes: Appears to be planning to lead a third party
The London First Post ^ | July 13, 2009 | Jonathan Harwood

Sarah Palin still won't say whether she's building towards a presidential campaign in 2012. But she does plan to stay involved in national politics and appears to be casting herself as the possible leader of a new movement in American politics, one that would welcome Republicans and Democrats.

"I will go around the country on behalf of candidates who believe in the right things, regardless of their party label or affiliation," she said in an interview with the Washington Times on Sunday. "People are so tired of the partisan stuff - even my own son is not a Republican," she added. Her son, Track, 20, who is serving with the US Army in Iraq, and her husband, Todd, are registered as 'non-partisan' in Alaska.

She also claimed that her decision to stand down as Governor of Alaska - which was revealed in a bizarre press conference on July 3 - was because the barrage of press attacks and allegations about her conduct and ethics had undermined her political programme.

The decision has bolstered her popularity among Republicans. A USA Today-Gallup poll found two-thirds of Republicans questioned wanted her to remain "a major national political figure".

It also seems to confirm the thoughts of those commentators who suspect that the prospect of national fame rather than ideology is her guiding star.

Andrew Sullivan, writing in the Sunday Times, said: "I love the idea of Sarah Palin: a brassy no-nonsense enemy of bloated government and corruption. That was probably John McCain's rough idea of who she was in the five minutes his staff vetted her, and on the one occasion he'd met her, before offering her a chance to be leader of the free world. The idea of Sarah Palin, though, is sadly not the reality of Sarah Palin.

"The reality of Sarah Palin is that politics is a means to her higher goal: celebrity. Every action she takes is designed to make sense... if you believe that government is really a version of a reality show.

"The remote, David Lynch-style location, the family often in trouble with the law, the pregnant teenage daughter and her impossibly handsome redneck boyfriend, the boyfriend's angry sister, an ornery Alaskan trooper, a few moose and mysterious pregnancies... and, well, the mini-series never ends. The best guess I've heard of the real reason for her abrupt departure is: 'I'm a celebrity... get me out of here!'"

One of Palin's first engagements after leaving office on July 26 comes on August 8 when she will address a Republican women's rally in California - in an aeroplane hangar that houses a retired presidential aircraft Air Force One, prompting more questions about her ambitions. Media will be banned from the meeting.

Sounds like a projection on his part.

Remember, Christian values and the ways of God are nonsense to the “natural man”.

“You have no road map to victory of any kind. You’re just shooting from the hip and hope you hit something.”

You have less knowledge than you think, as is typical with people that think they know it all. Let me ask you a couple questions, what grand road map got us to this point? How did the republicans become a party of big government?

Face it, you are one of the people that is heavily invested in the status quo. As long as the citizenry is fighting against each other, the inside the beltway crew maintains its grip on power. This is why the current status of the two party system is killing the USA.

I suppose you are against term limits as well.

You’re still distracted by the GOP vs RAT false political paradigm.

Palin is exposing the real political battle.

You are exactly correct. We have the leftists in DC destroying our economy, our way of life and possibly our very existence through their desire to be loved all around the world and on our side we're fighting over nothing.

We have only way one possible way out of this and that is to remain united to get rid of ANY RAT we can at any opportunity. Face your guns toward the RATs and not at each other.

You’re right about the fact that the libs Still do Not get it!

I beleive Sarah is going to do what President Reagan did when he won his first term to the Presidency.

Sarah’s intent to campaign for even Democrats is to win the Blue-dog Democrats over.

That is the way President Reagan won (with the Blue-dog Democrats help)- And that is what Sarah needs in order to get over the top in order to win in 2012!

"We have nothing to fear with Barack Obama in the White House."

-- the last RINO to run for the U.S. Presidency

Give me a RINO. I'll take them.

How'd that end up working for you, last time out?

Who’s “worshipping”?

I think what you’re seeing is that those with discernment are seeing someone whom God has called to a distinct, special purpose at this time in our history.

There is no “worship” in that. It’s recognizing a tool of God.

I will take a RINO to what we have now—any day. At least we have a chance with a RINO. WE HAVE NO CHANCES WITH THESE VERY, VERY DANGEROUS DEMOCRATS.

I believe it’s beyond that. Americans need to join together and elect reformers. The status quo is what kills America, not Sarah Palin saying that we need good ideas from any political party. I saw a video where she said Ron Paul was cool and had some great ideas. I agree with that. Do you?

Please. This is nit picking. We're fiddling while Rome is burning. Do everything within your power to stop these marxists on their leftward march.

There's another thread running that we may have nationalized health care in two weeks. Is that what you want? I say stop them, whatever way we can.

This is coming from someone who was a Republican at 12 years old and worked to elect Jerry Ford (1976), Al Haig (1987), both Bushes and Fred Thompson (last year - I was in the service during most of President Reagan's terms and couldn't dabble in politics).

How funny... the only true conservative president and worthwhile candidate was the only one you never worked for.

Sarah talking to Republican women ! That IS the beginning of a NEW party. The Republican women along with pro life independents, a large portion of Libertarians and pro life D-RATS will fill the void left by the much awaited death of the RepublicCAIN party.

There will be 2 major parties after Sarah naturally evolves into a juggernaut new party... it certainly won't be a plan of hers... It will be a natural progression and It's happening at breathtaking speed...

Expect to see the new Palin Party (call it what you will) versus the Socialist/ DemoCRATS in 2012. The GOP will be part of the dust heap of history or, at the very best nothing but a minor player

False analysis based on false assumptions will lead to disastrous conclusions every time.

“Defeating Rats at any cost” is just electing another rat in disguise.

Someone would ask you “why did you vote for that elitist socialist” and you reply “well, to keep that OTHER elitist socialist from winning”.

No, time to re-define, and to correctly define, what the political battle is about.

Those who believe that the elites should make decisions for the rest of us,
and those of us who want to make decisions for ourselves.

Elitists vs Individualists.
Doesn’t matter what letter they have after their name.
This is the true conflict.

As the Era of Obama now unfolds and bares itself to be the sham we knew it would be, my response to criticism about Palin is: “how’s that experiment with the community organizer working out for you?”

You used the phrase "the elitists vs the individualists"

On another thread I noticed you described Palin as "anti-elitist"

You would be better served to recognize that it is a matter of populists vs elitists, which is the oldest and most enduring political division(as well as social and economic division) that dates back to the dawn of civilization.

Palin is a populist and everyone easily recognizes her cultural populism(republican) but overlook her economic populism(democrat).

So when Palin says she might campaign for some democrats, she means that she might campaign for a democratic economic populist, such as Heath Shuler. But she definately wouldn't campaign for Democrats Markey and Waxman because they are cultural elitists.

Likewise, she won't campaign for republican economic elitist Kay Baily Hutchinson in the Texas Gubernatorial election, but she will campaign for republican Rick Perry because he is running the populist campaign.

I don’t buy the “populist” label. It has too many other connotations, like “workers of the world unite”.

Individualist, those who believe in individual liberty, anti-collectivist... not sure what term applies, but the description would be

opposed to those who believe that a group of elite experts can make better decisions about a person’s life, consumption habits, family matters, etc, than the individual person himself.

Why? Because I post the truth? You're not saying that we have just as good a chance with a leftist Democrat as a "centrist" Republican are you?

Never once have I said a RINO is preferable to a true conservative because they're not. I've had to work with them and they're extremely frustrating but considering the fix we're in now, I'd gladly trade some of these radicals in DC for a few RINOS.
