Area drivers looking to outwit police speed traps and traffic cameras are using an iPhone application and other global positioning system devices that pinpoint the location of the cameras.
That has irked D.C. police chief Cathy Lanier, who promised her officers would pick up their game to counteract the devices, which can also help drivers dodge sobriety checkpoints.
"I think that's the whole point of this program," she told The Examiner. "It's designed to circumvent law enforcement -- law enforcement that is designed specifically to save lives."
The new technology streams to iPhones and global positioning system devices, sounding off an alarm as drivers approach speed or red-light cameras.
Lanier said the technology is a "cowardly tactic" and "people who overly rely on those and break the law anyway are going to get caught" in one way or another.

I’d like to know why it’s okay for troopers to consistently break the speed limit when they’re off duty.

That is bunk. These types of motorist traps are designed to generate revenue.
While I strongly disapprove of both drunk driving and reckless driving, and I don't drive after even one drink, the focus of the sobriety checkpoints and the speed traps is on revenue and not safety. If a driver is sober enough to use an iphone to get around them or cautious and alert enough to adjust speed based on those alerts, I'm okay with that.
He should at least call it what it really is...
Tax evasion
It’s counter intuitive. When/where the intention of speed traps is to promote traffic safety - wouldn’t knowing where a speed trap is.... make one slow down?
Stating the obvious, the point of many speed traps is for municipalties to generate revenue. Too bad they don’t have the guts to say just that.

Law enforcement is not designed to save lifes. They have stated that. They are there to arrest you, fine you and fill out forms, nothing else.

Ms. Lanier would be much more comfortable with a nice, soft leather pair of jackboots (with heels of course), maybe some epaulettes,and to top it off a nice Iron Cross. The capital of the land of freedom has the bodyguard of Joseph Mengele as its head law enforcement officer.
No, the system designed specifically to RAISE REVENUE, is what is “cowardly”.

WHATEVER it is, right or wrong, it is NOT Cowardly! She is just a bitch trying to negatively label the users - the issue is unrelated to bravery in any sense.
