Does the Left need more proof that socialism doesn't work?

Posted on 07/20/2009 6:48:22 PM PDT by paul in cape

An economics professor stated he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class.

That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, after the Great Equalizer completes his agenda.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan." All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A.

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.

As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

The scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

Could not be any simpler than that.

Good post

We need to compile a book of these

One of my favorite stories is the one with the 5 diners who get charged according to their income.

So the poorest pay almost nothing, and then demand a refunded overcharge be given to the poorest resulting in them actually getting PAID to eat.

The next day the richest one does not show up for lunch...

We on the right think socialism is a failure because individuals cannot strive and accomplish and reap the benefits of their own effort. Those who advocate socialism think it is a success because they think they will be the elites who use the system to control and manipulate their inferiors while siphoning off a confortable living for themselves.

In the Soviet Union, there was always little food on the shelves for the common man, but the Communist Party members lived like kings. Was the system a failure? Depends on whether you were a Party member or not...

Nah, if only the class had “The One” professor, it would have worked.

It was at Bennington however, so in end he graded on the curve and they all got a B and everyone lived happily ever after.

I really like that story too. I’ve gotten it in email several times.

However...

I think if the class had one incredibly outstanding charismatic saint of a soul driven to be a savior to all and having absolutely no selfish motivations whatsoever and managed to win the complete trust of everyone...he could motivate everyone to knuckle down and do their best for the other people in the class.

That’s one possible scenario where socialism can work.(i know, long shot huh?)

here’s another...

If the class had one huge mean bully that everyone was afraid of and he sat on his fat a$$ and started breaking fingers off of anyone that didn’t perform up to his expectations...then possibly socialism could halfway function in that way...probably not prosper though.

This second scenario is probably less of a longshot but certainly not nearly as desirable.

Hmmmm...veeery interesting...

I just realized my two examples are very similar to a famous quote by ronald reagan:

“communism only works in heaven, where they don’t need it, and in hell, where they already have it.”

Sounds like what the administration has in mind for us. Extravagant White House parties for 4000 feasting on Hawaiian barbecue flown from Hawaii at taxpayer expense. We are supposed to be uplifted watching our betters feast while we count pennies. All of us will ultimately be forced into the Federal denial-of-care plan while our ‘betters’ continue get their VIP treatment at our expense. Time to raise Mme Guillotine? I'll do the knitting.

The conservatives sabotaged the class and should be shot!

I suspect this is an Urban Legend.

I've seen this or similar before. I believe that anyone with strong belief in there ideology won't let facts get in their way until THEY are faced with the complete bottoming out of THEIR lifestyle.

Me too. That's why I tend to be skeptical. When I see a story like this which talks about "a professor" and "students" and at a college, I dont' believe it until I get some verification of the facts.

Which Professor, which students, which school, when did it happen? Stuff like that.

There is no source for this story and no names. In that respect it is nothing more than an urban legend... Something we would all like to believe, but before I repeat this story I want to check the facts.

More of a fable, a parable. I read somewhere that this was a Russian story, told for the benefit of the dopes in the west who still don't get it.

I've seen this posted here many times in the past, but it does show one of the great problems of socialism. The lack of incentive. Why bother to work hard if you're not going to profit from your labor? Why bother to improve your lot in life if you're being held down? Why take risks when those risks will not lead to opportunity for improvement?

One of the ugly little secrets of the left is that of immense hubris. Even though socialism has eventually failed everywhere it's been tried (and Marx clearly stated that socialism was designed from the beginning to be a transitional state into communism), the "True Believers" can't or refuse to grasp the fact that the entire concept of socialism is flawed from the outset. Instead, it's always that "socialism just wasn't implemented right," and the flaws were caused by the "wrong people" trying to make it work. And of course, the current crop of socialists are finally the ones who will "get it right."

Also, there's no such thing as a Conservative teacher. It would be neat if one had the guts to actually do this.

Of course socialism works.

You just don't understand what socialists are trying to accomplish, so you are judging them by an artificial standard.

Asyou can see, on its own terms, socialism is a smashing success.

...I dont' believe it until I get some verification of the facts.

It's probably due to the 'left' know substituting "think" for "feel".

From my experience, few of the rabid know the difference anyway.
