Four unions representing the nation's postal workers are pleading for a meeting with the White House to address possible funding shortfalls for workers' payroll and retiree health benefits, according to a letter obtained by CongressDaily.

The letter alleges that USPS "may not be able to make payroll in October and will be forced to issue IOUs instead."

Yvonne Yoerger, a spokeswoman for USPS, confirmed that the unions wrote the letter but disputed the claim that payroll deadlines will be missed.

Interesting. Under Pres. Bush there would have been screaming headlines

Awesome. File this under holy crap for me. I’m only still working in the postal service for security until it seems like i can start my small business without getting taxed to death.

Here's a clue to the USPS.

GET RID OF DEAD WEIGHT! If your losing business because people are NOT using your service it may be a sign you need to change with the times!

Just my .44 cents worth.

NO! NO!~ NO!

These postal unions already pay very little for healthcare versus what the rest of the Federal employees have to pay something like we pay ten times more a month then the postal workers.

They are the most pampered group of federal employees there are but they are not subject to Civil Service rules but want all the perks.

This is a big fat NO to more benefitis — time to privatise the Post Office and make it efficient! Let companies bid to run the post office. It takes five days for a first class letter to travel from Orlando, FL, to Norman, OK.

OK Let’s just bring the Postal Clowns into the “Social Security””System”. THAT should solve ALL of their problems.

By virtue of electronic bill-pay and just plain ol’ service and attitude problems, they are going out of business.
Lots of efficient and cost-effective options for most shipping/mailing needs.
Bye bye POS!

usps and their over-paid unions allowed fedex, ups etc take away their profit center.

would you want the u.s. government running your health care?

There was a Republican proposal to use postal workers to conduct the census. I don’t know where it is in the process but there is a proposition that actually makes sense. And it would have saved 600m. (I think - the numberstodssed around these days are so large, i can’t keep them straight)

We need a U.S. Postal Service Union Workers’ Union.

Someone who understands the needs of union workers’ problems and can properly present those needs to the union bosses. That would make for at least five unions the USPS would be held accountable to.

Here comes a plea for raising first class postage to 50 cents and 25 cents for each additional ounce. And then $1.00 for a first class stamp.

I am not always real happy with my letter carrier, but the folks at the local office have always been friendly, if not rushed.

Living in Alaska the USPA is about the only way to get ‘stuff’ up here at reasonable cost.

I ordered a device from seattle, the vendor would ONLY use UPS/FedEX because they pickup. Free shipping - except to AK and HI. Cost of shipping $36 on a $3 item

By using USPS I usually save 1/2 or more and I don’t mind waiting the couple of extra days.

So the USPS does have some happy customers, or at least folks more than willing to use the service.

It takes five days for a first class letter to travel from Orlando, FL, to Norman, OK.

Unfortunately, I can beat that — it took 20 DAYS for our church’s newsletter to get to us — a total of 10 MILES!!!!
Unbelievable!!

Barack the Magnificient should appoint a czar who will in turn force a merger between USPS, UPS and Fedex. The combined unit will then be forced into a pre-packaged bankruptcy afterwhich the postal union will own 40% of newco, the Federal government will own 40% (but it really doesn't want to), the Postal Czar will get 10% and the shareholders of UPS and Fedex get 10%.

Hey, works for me!
