LITTLE EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. — When word got out that Mr. McBeth, a popular substitute teacher at two southern New Jersey school districts was about to come back to class as Miss McBeth, it caused an uproar.

The former William McBeth had undergone sex reassignment surgery and was now Lily McBeth. The schools' 2006 decisions to keep her on as a substitute were hailed around the nation as a model of tolerance and acceptance of transgender Americans.

But the storybook ending never happened: She got only a handful of assignments since then and is resigning in frustration.

I’d guess age had more to do with it than anything.

In many states, the principal selects the substitutes they want. I doubt many wanted the grief they would endure if this person was hired.

I wonder how many other over-70 substitute teachers in these districts are getting more than a handful of assignments each year. I’d guess few if any.

Dang straight. I can't recall any teacher that old being present in my entire 12 years of public school. Heck, my brother-in-law's girlfriend just retired and I think she's just over 50.

I gotta hear this again. He was coming back as Miss (Lady) McBeth? Ther are so many Shakespear scholars on this board who could address it more appropriately.

“...75 is well past the age...”

Well past the age where a sex-change would mean much, too.

At the risk of coining a term, “transgender cougar.”

"It seems like a good teacher is being judged for something other than her talent, and we should all be able to agree that's not fair," said Boylan, who transitioned in 2000. "My heart goes out to Lily and all people who have to fight prejudice as a result of who they are." -- Jennifer Boylan [a former john and English professor]

Prejudice? Uh, yeah. So? Anyone who would mutilate himself is obviously insane and not fit to work with the developing minds of our children. An example follows.

While some parents objected at public meetings to McBeth continuing to teach after becoming a woman, many students were supportive.

"I can see where some people might have concerns, but people just need to get over it," one Pinelands high school student said in 2006.

So, the older and more mature parents know a stinkaroo when they smell one, but the minds of "many students" have already been compromised.

"I could sue them over the violation of my medical privacy rights, but what would that accomplish?"

Your medical privacy rights? You violated those when you announced your choppadicoffamy to the entire world. What? It didn't involve doctors and surgery?

Take your gay rights agenda and [I'm too polite to say what to do with it, but use your imagination to the very limit of its scope].
