Prosecutor: Dad Threw Girl Off Cliff to Avoid Child Support

LOS ANGELES — A father who had no interest in his 4-year-old daughter did the unimaginable — hurling her off a 120-foot cliff to avoid paying child support, a prosecutor said Monday during the man's murder retrial.

Cameron Brown, 47, has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder in the death of Lauren Sarene Key in November 2000. If convicted, he could face life in prison without parole.

Deputy District Attorney Craig Hum said during his opening statement that Brown killed Lauren because he didn't want to pay about $1,000 a month in child support.

Defense attorney Pat Harris countered that it was an accident when the girl fell from Inspiration Point in Rancho Palos Verdes.

I read about another case like this. It was proved the victim’s injuries were consistent with being thrown out and away from the cliff, and then falling down....not falling over and tumbling and clawing to try to stop the fall.

Simple physics can demonstrate that. Tumbling down an embankment sort of thing is not the same thing as being launched.

...by throwing off the same cliff, with a rope tied to his foot. Drag him back and drop him four times. One for every year of that baby’s life and the h@ll he has given to the mother forever.

If he is guilty, I vote for that.

Aside from the cost to society: if you were to choose life w/o parole or death for yourself, what would you choose? I personally might prefer execution because it would be too depressing to live without hope, and death comes in the end anyway.

An eye for an eye. The Grand Canyon might be about the same scale for his height and weight.

There's a difference between sitting on a jury and sitting in front of a keyboard.

Anything we say here has little if any effect on the outcome of the case.

Now, if a major daily newspaper in the county from which the jury pool would be drawn, or 88 professors at a local university ditto, decided to declare him guilty without any evidence, or if the District Attorney lied, concealed exculpatory evidence, and tried the case in the newspapers, THAT would be a whole lot closer to a lynch mob.

By the way, a number of people have been convicted on hearsay evidence, if it falls under one of the exceptions to the hearsay rule. And circumstantial evidence (which I think is what is really involved here) has sent plenty of folks to the chair or the Big House.

But fortunately for the defendant and for our peace of mind (and likely our souls), we don't have the power to convict anybody on the basis of a pretrial news story.

I will say this -- IF CONVICTED, he ought to burn. Horrible crime and an absolutely inexcusable motive.

Well, the jury has to decide on the evidence. But he sure looks just the way you’d expect a vile murderer to look.

What a contrast between him and his daughter. Not so much his looks as his expression—what comes through the eyes and the set of his mouth.

I think this man is a disgusting human being.

Now if I may... how many women do the equivalent before birth for the same reason essentially.

Too many people in this country have no respect for life.

It’s just so heartbreaking.

I weep for that poor little one.

Seems odd, but prison inmates have a code of acceptable crimes, believe it or not. Child molesters and other crimes against children don't go over very well. I'll be surprised if he survives the 6 months in prison.

This precious child is dead.

Who died in the tiny bathroom?

Why not just save the state taxpayers money and administer proper justice and toss him off the same cliff? Can’t we just apply common sense and take care of this simple problem quickly and efficiently? Will only cost time for a few guards, and a couple tossers (heck one or two guards might be able to be the tossers).

I can’t imagine how the mother and family will live with this. I would guess that they will think of her and how she died every day for the rest of their lives.

In other cases, I would agree with you, but in this case, let that evil bastard PAY for it day IN and day OUT in prison.

Heard that people are not too kind to people like this.

I have a four year old Daughter named Lauren. I could have stopped reading the article at: "A father who had no interest in his 4 year old daughter. . ." As a father of 6, including 2 four year old daughters, I can't tell you how much I hate this man. But when I do I can only imagine how much God must righteously hate that man. If I did something to him it wouldn't be blameless, but thank God that when He judges him, the full wrath of a righteous God can be brought down on this man.

I can only be ok with this because I know that God keeps the books and He promised: "Vengeance is mine, I WILL repay." When I read horror stories like this one, that verse is the only thing that keeps me sane.

Thank you for posting her picture. Thank God that we can rest assured if he did this, he will not escape.

However, if he is guilty, his activity would not be odd for an intelligent atheist.

You are talking out of your ass. I'm an atheist and doing this would never cross my mind. Keep your stupid comments to yourself.

Sure, the guy's a monster, but sometimes our own system creates monsters.<<<<<<<

I pay child support for 3 of my 6 children (the other 3 live with me). So I can understand your argument about the draconian laws that practically make a divorced man a slave to his ex-wife.

But in this context, it's pretty horrific to even seem to excuse the thought of doing such a horrible thing. If my ex-wife was allowed to enslave me, beat me every day, and torture me just for good measure I can assure you I would never even consider throwing my 4 year old daughter off a cliff to get out of it.

So while I understand your statement, I totally reject it as a means of "creating" this sort of monster. There is no excuse, none for this sort of man.

However, if he is guilty, his activity would not be odd for an intelligent atheist. It would be highly pragmatic.

It would also be repugnant to any religious or agnostic person. Oh please! The vast overwhelming majority of violent crimes in America are performed by individuals who profess belief in God.

Of course, luckily for our society very few people, religious, agnostic or atheist commit these types of horrible crimes.

Being an atheist doesn't mean you believe murder is OK if you can get away with it. Just as Christian philosophy is a deep subject with interesting ideas, such as "just war" so, too, is atheist philosophy. To try to make this simplistic linkage is absurd and only shows you haven't ever studied philosphy.

Don't you hate it when people who don't know anything about your religion or beliefs make ignorant and prejudicial statements about them? Most of us do, and make an effor not to pop off like this.

I suggest if you don’t want to pay child support throw yourself off the cliff. Don’t have children if you don’t want to support them.
