Considering Relocating? Think about Colorado Springsā€¦
Outside Magazine ^ | 7/29/2009 | self

Posted on 07/29/2009 2:03:41 PM PDT by ChinaGotTheGoodsOnClinton

Outside Magazine just ranking Colorado Springs as the best place to live.

http://outside.away.com/outside/destinations/200908/best-towns-america-colorado-springs.html

Outside Magazine lists as a drawback that it might be get this TOO CONSERVATIVE for some people.

As you know, Money Magazine consistently usually ranks it number 1 as well. http://www.ownyourownmountain.com/artman/publish/Gazette_Telegraph_Article.html

I f you or a CONSERVATIVE person is considering relocating, I’d invite you to tell them about this family values oasis. I’d personally suggest Northern Colorado Springs as being the best and the most conservative. And just to lay my cards on the table, I am not in the Real Estate business and make nothing off anyone moving here. I just know that Soros and others have dumped millions into Colorado and have succeeding in taking over the state government for the first time in decades recently.

The Springs loses out to Denver and Boulder in the state elections but it is still close enough to make a difference.

Pass this along.

No rain in FBKS! Almost 80, and no rain in the forcast. I agree about March, when it’s cold, it almost kills your spirits.

I was stationed at Ft. Carson from 1972-1973 including a forced march to the top of Pikes Peak one time. I almost died. LOL. Almost stayed there permanently. Interesting place but people seem a little different. I'd like to back some day to check out how much it's changed.

Colorado SPrings? You must be kidding! Even though it has Ft Carson, the A.F. Academy, and Peterson A.F. Base located there, it’s as liberal as Boulder.

You are clueless.

I’ve heard most people live underground during the winter ....

We ski. And hike. And do winter activities. Plus, it is actually pleasant a lot of the times so there are other things to do like having cigars by the fireplace at the Broadmoor.

I would disagree on the North being the most conservative. The southern side of the Springs is great and near Ft Carson. I am in the Broadmoor area and it is a very conservative area.

Bottom-line is that this is a great place and I absolutely love it here.

Florence has several prisons, including the Federal Administrative Maximum Facility (Called the "SuperMax" or Florence ADX_, where the worst of the worst are kept. I have a friend who works in one of the state prisons down there, and she really likes her job; good pay and interesting. From what I understand, the people down there are happy to have the prisons. They are clean, non-polluting, pay well, and are economically stable.

The prisons are mostly off in the distance, off the main road into town, and don't ruin the landscape - I was surprised at how unobtrusive they really are the first time I went down there.

I love Florence & Cañon City (pronounced "Canyon")- a good friend of ours is from there, and we go visit his family every so often. Both quiet, clean towns, full of nice people. It is always a pleasure to go down there.

If you've never been, go! The scenery in that area is so pretty.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh We do have a lot of snow, but most winters, we probably have a nice warm sunny day with glorious weather for every snowy day. Don't tell anyone, though. We're happy to have most people think the winters are terribly harsh as we don't want too many people moving here

When it isn't actively snowing, it's fun to hike, bike, and walk.

Skiing, of course.

The springs at Mount Princeton are fabulous in the winter. Nothing like sitting in the middle of a rushing ice cold creek with snow everywhere, warm and cozy in your own little thermal rock pool.

Taking the train to the top of Pikes Peak in the winter, past herds of elk is always fun.

Visiting Manitou when the tourists are gone. Heck, visiting anywhere in Colorado when the tourists are gone - we do most of our "local" sight seeing in the winter. Museums, galleries, shops, restaurants, etc., which are busy in the summer, are quieter in the winter.

Hikes through Garden of the Gods in the winter. Last year we saw elk playing in the snow one time, sheep the next, and mule deer pretty much every time.

We love to visit the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in the winter - many of the animals seem more active in the winter for some reason.

Colorado, and especially Colorado Springs is gorgeous and fun year 'round.

Pretty much the same here .... we have the Cascades where I ski, Stevens Pass or up on Snoqualmie Pass ... I hike the Cascades in the summer ... over on the Peninsula we have Hurricane Ridge, great hiking there plus some warm springs to soak in ... I live on the Peninsula on six acres of heavily forested land ... our place is over a mile up a forest service road ...

Colorado Springs, the way America oughta be, where Obama got 39% of the vote and Kerry 32%.

Wierd and eclectic stuff about Colorado Springs:

The Mayor and the GOP County Chairman are both Hispanic Reaganites.
The only SMSA in which a majority of the adult males are veterans.
Despite (or because of?) heavy conservative GOP influence, “The Springs” has the narrowest average income gap between Black and White of all US cities(9%).
According to “Dog Fancy” magazine, the best city in which to own a dog.
The cleanest air, plus mountain water.
The first American city with a power grid.
Home to the 2nd oldest automobile race in America.
Home of the most grueling marathon in the world, with a 7,000 foot vertical climb.
Home of the beloved song “America the Beautiful.”
4th cheapest utilities.
And proprty taxes less than half of suburban Chicago.

“Welcome to Colorado Springs, where the black people are whiter than the white people.”

"Is Falcon AFB a new one? ... it must be at the Academy "

Yeah, he means the Academy. Also Peterson AFB, Schriever AFB, NORTHCOM, SPACECOM, NORAD and Fort Carson. Crawling with military, including 600 Canadian AF personnel attached to NORAD.

It's politically very conservative, but that is due more to the military and the libertarians than the evangelicals (though they are a significant component). Church attendance is only slightly higher than the national average, though that may be because every Sunday morning the gorgeous mountains are out there with outstretched arms and calling "Come unto me...".

"Pray for me I drive Academy!"

I'm a refugee from Chicago (where for awhile, I drove tractor-trailer in the city). Every time I hear people complain about traffic in the Springs I have to struggle to keep myself from rolling my eyeballs.

But that may be because while the Springs is getting pretty big, because of the military people who didn't want to go back home to Dinkytown,USA, the city has a definite small town atmosphere. My first month here, I had a flat and ten people stopped to offer help. In Chicago, they hit the gas to make the splash extra big.

OK, last one...

Today’s protest against ObamaCare in Acacia Park drew about 900-1000, despite rain.

Channel 13 did not bother to mention it on the 10:00 news.

That used to be a popular bumper sticket back in the 80’s.

Lived there in the 80’s and enjoyed it. Haven’t been back since 1992 and dont know if I’d even recognize the place.
