Caffeine May Prevent and Help Reverse Alzheimer's Disease
Natural News ^ | Aug. 2, 2009 | S. L. Baker

In experiments with lab mice especially bred to develop symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, University of South Florida (USF) researchers at the Florida Alzheimer's Disease Research Center ADRC gave the aged animals the equivalent of the caffeine in five cups of coffee a day. The results? Their severe memory impairment was reversed.

This study, along with other AD research by the same group of scientists, was just published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. Both studies show that caffeine significantly decreased abnormal levels of beta amyloid (the protein linked to AD) in both the brains and blood of lab rodents who had symptoms of Alzheimer's. This research follows on the heels of previous ADRC research that found caffeine given to this same strain of mice when they were young prevented memory problems from developing -- even though the animals were bred to develop Alzheimer's symptoms as they grew old.

Coffee, chocolate, wine -- all the things they kept telling us are bad for us, turn out that they are actually good for us.

Everything in moderation, of course.

More study will probably turn up subgroups of people helped by such things. My sainted aunt, an avid coffee drinker all her life, perished not too long ago with severe Alzheimer’s dementia.

My father died of Alzheimer’s Disease. He drank 5-6 cups of coffee a day.

Thanks for sharing — sorry about your Aunt.

I was just thinking that they shoudl do a survey of lifetime coffee drinking habits of Alzheimer patients.

Clearly it’s not that simple, but as you said, there may be a subgroup that is helped, or coffee is one component, but other things are needed as well.

Let's not go that far!

IMO, your genetic makeup is much more important than your food and/or drink intake.

My 100 (yes, 100) year old grandmother just passed her driver’s exam.

She gets up in the middle of the night, brews a cup of coffee and goes back to bed.

MMMM. Coffee.

A mouse needs 5 cups a day. So a human would need the caffeine in several thousand cups.

40 cups in a short period can be lethal. 1000 would kill you. Those mice must have been wired or dead!

My Grandfather (on dads side) drank heavily and smoked his entire lie. He ate bacon and eggs every day for breakfast dug ditches for the power company...he died at 101 years of age. My dad was a carpenter, drank everyday, smoked, ate what ever he wanted...died at 98 of a heart attack. My Grandfather on moms side died of the flu at 45 and all his kids (except mom) died young of one thing or another. Genetics means everything.

My m-i-l, whose faith prohibited the use of caffiene, has early late stage Alzheimers. She is in a secure nursing home (heartbreakingly, she wanders and wants to go ‘home’). She is in a monitored unit (and had to be ‘braceleted’ when she was hospitlized months ago for another health issue).

Her sister, same religious constraints, also had Alzheimers (she has passed away). I think genetics figures into this more than lifestyle choices.

I can’t wait until they announce that a daily dose of cigarettes, beer and unprotected sex with everything alive will make you immortal.

I do that too.

Nice to know that I may have 40+ more years of this torture

“Where do the mice get their tiny little coffee cups?”

Lab animals are given their caffeine just as bond traders get theirs - by IV, of course!

It appears that everything will cure anything in mice. There are many mice cancer cures that don’t work in humans.
