HARTFORD, CN - A new survey suggests that the number of American Jews who consider themselves religiously observant has dropped by more than 20 percent over the last two decades.

The 2008 American Religious Identification Survey found that around 3.4 million American Jews call themselves religious, out of a general Jewish population of about 5.4 million.

Those who call themselves only culturally Jewish rose from 20 percent in 1990 to 37 percent last year according to the study, which also found Jews more likely to be secular than other Americans.

This falling away would explain why Jews vote for leftists and ignore what is happening in Israel. All this voting for the wrong ideology will come back to haunt them when it's too damned late.

Wrong, the 100% Democrat vote comes from the little old retired Jew's, in Florida.

Historically, Jews have voted Democrat since FDR.

That’s why they are now retired and living in Florida. Except a really nice old man I know, has a business down the street, he’s in his nineties, and works everyday..

...Professor Alan Dershowitz at Harvard has said that in the future observant Jews in America would devolve into a splinter sect like the Amish....he blames this on the trend to marry outside the faith.

I can assure you that pretty much all Jews here in LA are 100% liberal.

Then they go home to a fairly conservative lifestyle.

The LORD did say that His people are stiff necked :)

Dust off the golden calf Becky we're holding services tonight at Temple Belief in God is Optional.
I have see an ad in a South Florida Jewish newspaper for a new Temple and it actually said: Belief in God is Optional!
American religiuos Jews are outnumbered 4 to i which is exactly the number who vote for Obama to give him the green light to abandon Isreal. http://www.collinsreport.net/2009/05/07/while-american-jews-cheer-him-on-obama-is-killing-israel-they-love-socialism-more-than-israel/

90% of America’s Jews stem from the immigration wave of 1890-1910. They came from Eastern Europe and came largely against the advice of the Rabbinate.
It is no wonder that so many of them and their progeny became non-religious or token-religious(reform, conservative etc.).
Religious Jewry stems from a tiny minority of those “fiddler”generation and largely refugees, escapees and survivors of Hitler and Stalin that came in the 30-50’s. They are popping out babies and are not intermarrying, and are becoming more observant.
Imagine how religious Irish and Italian catholics would be if the Pope condemned immigration to the US in the 1890’s only Sinead Oconnor and Sacco and Vanzetti typeswould have come

Religious Jews like myself have contempt for Jews-In-Name-Only (JINOs) who have replaced Akiba with Alinska and Moses with Marx. They are “Reform” (we say “Deformed”) JINOs, and if you have ever had to suffer through a sermon from one of their female, hyphenated-name males or gay “rabbis” , then you know how utterly detached from Judiasm they are. They are intermarrying, becoming athiests, turning gay and having abortions. And I could not care less. Because my Lubovitch (Orthodox) friends average 8 kids per family, and within 25 years will dominate American Jewry. By the way, 77% of them voted for John McCain last year, as opposed to the 84% of Deformed JINOs who supported the Jew-hating Obama.

And if they'd listened to their rabbis, they would have stayed and been slaughtered.

So much for listening to rabbis.

As an Israeli, I note that, until recently, even US liberals were pro-defense, which, includes (at the most cynical level), the use of Israel as a military beach head in the middle east, which stabilized the middle east.

In short, miltary aid to Israel was cheaper (and better) than mulitiple carrier fleets in the region.

Even apparent anti-semites like Kennedy realized this.

From the right, in contrast, there was the John Birch variety of Jew hatred (now Ron Paul) and the White Shoe Country Club Jew hatred of James Baker (not active hatred, but just didn’t want a bunch of uncouth hook noses on the links; as bad as Baptists and Catholics, you know) (this group has largely died of old age, except for the US Senate).

In short, only recently has the mainstream Republican Party been more friendly to Israel than the Democrat party, so for an idealistic (meaning, “unrealistic and sucker”) urban Jewish voter, the Democrat party was a natural home.

That is no longer the case.

Unfortunately, by now, most US Jews are secular and have little or no connection to Israel, so it’s too late to matter, from a voting perspective.

Truth is; observant Jews like us have to redouble our efforts to reach out to our less observant brethren. The efforts of Chabad and of the non-Chabad kiruv movements have been hugely successful. This study may say that large numbers are unobservant, but here in Los Angeles I see nothing but tremendous growth in the religious world here. Many new schools, many new shuls, neighborhoods bursting at the seems with new families. I just do not buy it.

What troubles me about this "study" is that it does not seem to differentiate between Jews who are born of Jewish mothers or not. How many of the Jews in this study aren't Jews at all?

“Religious Jews like myself have contempt for Jews-In-Name-Only (JINOs)”

I disagree with them, but I recall that is not a Jew’s job to force a fellow Jew into observance — that breeds resentment and a stiff neck and “fake” observance.

That is, observance that lacks the heart and faith behind it, which is pointless.

Love them, be kind to them, and help them the best you can. By far, that is the best strategy.

(FWIW, I am Israeli, was deemed “secular” in Israel, and am leaning toward some sort of non-kabbalistic Orthodox in the States.)

Off topic, but I had a long discussion with Qaraim who all but convinced me that Judaism could also be patrilineal.

I didn’t agree with him, mind you, but it is a defensible position.

I don't care if they are observant. I care if they preach the DNC platform from the bima, instead of the Torah.

Yep. That was also a big problem in Israel where they let in all these Russians with questionable halachic origins. Now some of them are neo-nazis terrorizing Jews.
