McCain Says Public Option Must Be Dropped for Compromise
NY Times ^ | August 24, 2009 | JOSEPH BERGER

Wading into the debate on a national health care plan, Senator John McCain said on Sunday that one way for Democrats and Republicans to reach a compromise would be for President Obama to abandon a government-run insurance program for the nation’s 49 million uninsured.

Interviewed on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” Mr. McCain, the Arizona Republican and 2008 presidential candidate, said that a public plan would cause many Americans to lose their private health insurance. Although he was not asked to explain, opponents of a government-run plan have previously warned that many employers would scuttle private insurance for their workers if such a program were enacted.

“Certainly if you have it, you shouldn’t have to lose it,” Mr. McCain said of private insurance. “But under the president’s plan, you would have to lose it in my view because of the government option. I believe that one of the fundamentals for any agreement would be that the president abandon the government option.”

Last week, Kathleen Sebelius, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, said that a government-run plan was not essential to an overhaul, a concession to United States senators who say such a plan could not win the backing of a majority of the crucial Senate Finance Committee. The focus shifted to discussion of nonprofit medical co-operatives, which are popular in some Midwestern states and more palatable to conservatives. But outrage by liberals supporting a government plan has made the fate of that provision unclear.

Senator Charles E. Schumer, the New York Democrat and a member of the Finance committee, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that President Obama “believes strongly in a public option.”

He argued that a government plan was imperative because it would introduce competition in the industry. In 40 of the 50 states, he said...

This idiot had better shut up about “compromise”. Hey, McCain, the frickin’ RINO, yeah, you. I’m talking to you, “We don’t want a compromise, we don’t want health care reform, we want what we have now!”. End of Rant and I only wish I lived in Arizona so I could vote the pr**** out of office next year.

The only “compromise” is to shred every bill out there and start completely over!

No, we don't want to start over, we want to leave things alone. Want to change something? Change the tort laws. Change medicare and medicaid, leave the government out of our health care.

Since when has a Demoncart EVER compromised their principles of evil to accommodate the “right”?

It's ALWAYS the other way around and WHY we are so screwed today. These empty headed “representatives” make me sick.

Has McCain inflicted enough damage yet?

He flipped right around on stimulus #1 and he could do it again on 0bamaCare. My trust for him is less than zero.

Forget the compromise, Senator. No more "reaching across the aisle" on this issue.

Note to McCain:(Perhaps this, among many other reasons is why few conservatives "flocked" to vote for you)Public Option is only one of many, many reasons NOT to vote for this Obama-nation!

Not the least of which are "death panels"- yes, this is exactly what they are, no matter what you "enlightened" elites in the media claim, "pregnancy planning counseling," "effective Americans (meaning only people who Big Brother deems "useful), just to name a mere handful.

Not the least of which NONE of YOU elected slobs plan to take part in this "wonderful experiment."

Fortunately, you and others like you who aren't quite qualified to tell those of us who don't plan on "stepping aside" to make room for millions of illegal aliens who "need" our space in doctors' offices.

"McQueeg needs to be voted out of office in 2010."

Two Republicans already have announced they will challenge McCain in the primary: Chris Simcox, the founder of the border-watch group Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, and political unknown Jim Deakin, who describes himself as a Navy veteran and "successful small businessman." Some are hoping J.D. Hayworth, a former congressman turned KFYI talk-radio host, will enter the GOP race, too.

If one side is saying “NO DEAL” without the public option, you’re better off by at least appearing to be willing to compromise.

Being seen as an “obstructionist” won’t help our cause.

This type of thinking is exactly why the GOP is in the situation it's in.

(note to senator mac, from one of his constituents)

Senator McCain,

WOULD YOU PLEASE STOP STANDING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE AISLE?

IT’S GARBAGE LIKE THIS THAT IS HELPING TO RUIN THE COUNTRY.

Do you want my vote in 2012?

Than act like a CONSERVATIVE.
