WASHINGTON A close associate says Jody Powell, who was White House press secretary during Jimmy Carter's presidency, has died.
Powell, a Georgia native known for his deep Southern drawl, worked on Carter's presidential campaign in 1976 and served as the Carter's spokesman between 1977 and 1981. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Jody Powell is chairman of Powell Tate. As one of the firm’s founders, he has been instrumental in creating Washington’s most dynamic and respected public relations firm, serving a client roster that includes many of the nation’s prominent corporations, trade associations and nonprofit organizations. In May 1970, Powell joined gubernatorial candidate Jimmy Carter’s staff. When Carter became the governor of Georgia in November 1970, Powell was appointed press secretary, a position he held through the end of Carter’s term as President of the United States. For five years, Powell wrote a twice-weekly column syndicated by the Los Angeles Times and was a news analyst for ABC News, appearing on such shows as This Week with David Brinkley, Nightline and Good Morning America. He has also lectured frequently on public policy and press issues.
He was two weeks shy of his 66th birthday.
Jody broke the killer Rabbit story.
Hm RIP... how was his.. politics? Don’t know anything about him.
Hard to believe he was 66 years old. I thought perhaps he was younger. Still too young to die.
He was kicked out of the Air Force Academy for cheating in his senior year.
As bad as President Peanut was, I always liked Jody Powell. He had a good skill set for being a Press Secretary, plus some charm and was honest. May he RIP.
Too young, God rest his soul and God bless his family.
was he the one who splashed amaretto into Jehan Sadat’s
cleavage while making a crack about the ‘pyramids of Egypt’?
The guy I really like is Pat Cadell. He was on with Beck I think on Saturday during the Tea Party.
He is an old school Blue Dog N. Florida Democrat and is sickened about what has happened to the Dems.
If you are so young you don't remember...have you heard of "Google". Don't be so lazy...
Just checked the accuracy of your statement...and it is correct. I'm sure I was in flight school with folks who knew him. Makes sense... a cheat and a democrat..they fly formation with one another.
Considering what a loser Carter was, I thought Jody Powell was a decent guy. And Obama’s press secretary makes him look absolutely splendid, in comparison.
May he rest in peace.
“....known for his deep Southern drawl....” To the parochial, insular MSM, which recruits almost exclusively from the liberal hives of the Northeast and the west coast, a Southern accent is sufficiently unusual as to be something one is “known for.” What jerks!
While in College, a few years back...I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Powell. We were there to interview him for our college paper, other colleges from Illinois were also represented.
He treated us well, was gracious and thoughtful.
Then he was a bad guy. I mean that. I think cheating shows a person’s
true colors. Ted Kennedy was a cheat.
So true; but, speaking of Jody Powell, whatever happened to that other Carter dynamo, Hamilton Jordan?
Pat Cadell’s tone has certainly changed from a few short years ago. Does it look to you like he’s lost a lot of weight? I wonder if he’s doing okay.
Jody, Jody, Jody....
I just verified on google he is “tits up as well”....the moral of the story...you don’t live long hanging around democrat pukes...
I always liked the guy. Perhaps sympathy for his having to be Carter’s mouthpiece.
RIP.
I like the way you think.
there are exceptions.....
Just wondering; but, the only thing I have in common with him is that we’ll both end up in the same place.....but, maybe not.
Condolences to his family he always seemed like a decent southern gentleman to me.
Obama pulled the plug.
He was in fact one of the ringleaders. We don’t see that mentioned much, co we? It’s not like he was a Republican.
Hard to believe that Jimmy Carter was a US Naval Academy graduate.
Poor bastard. First he was Carter’s Press Secretary, and now this.
A name that we haven’t thought of in years.
Condolences to those who love him.
Well goggle would be full of lib’s point of view,, thought I’d ask here first... so.. sorry.
Compared to what surrounds O ,these guys were patriots. I always like Ham Jordan. Teaming up with Carter was a poor decision.
He was the best of the Carter crowd, and of course, that’s not saying much. But he was a good, decent guy with that ever present friendly smile and affable demeanor. My prayers go out to his family and loved ones.
I would leave it at that, but I can’t help but wonder what he would be doing hanging out with the likes of that former LA Times political correspondent, and arch-leftist, Jack Nelson? I would rate Nelson as one of the most dishonest reporters, right up there with Duranty and DanRather.
RIP.
I certainly didn’t agree with him, but he seemed like a decent guy.
And his boss lives on and on and on and on and...
The interrupting, badgering, and non-responding that goes on on all broadcasting, radio and television, is a horrible model for conversation. There are exceptions, of course. The worst example I’ve ever seen is Lawrence O’Donnell. Sean is almost as bad. Hugh Hewitt is maddening—he completes almost every sentence a guest starts. Probably the best listener on talk radio is Bill Bennett. Rush is not bad.
hamilton jordan ???
I remember Jody. Just another cracker... or does being a Democrat absolve you of that?
NY Times reports that Powell’s wife said heart attack was cause of death. I wonder if Powell was taking aspirin daily?
