Maureen Dowd's latest column makes me realize we need a new category of award to recognize those whose senses are so finely tuned, that they can detect massive, lethal doses of radioactive racism completely undetectable by normal humans.
The name of the award is inspired by Neil Young's song "Southern Man," penned years after the civil rights violence, when he toured the South looking for signs of change. Many southerners at the time were proud of the progress they could see all around them. But that's not what Old Neil saw and heard.
All that this Canadian could see on his quick Southern tour were "tall white mansions" where all the whites lived, versus "little shacks" where all the blacks lived, and all that his ears could hear - musician's ears finely tuned by years of gigadecibel concert stages - all they could hear in the air around him were:
"I heard screaming, and bullwhips cracking....".
This outstanding ability to sniff out ugly, violent racism in the air, even in amounts on the order of parts-per-trillion, has continued on through the decades with such luminaries as Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and now Ms. Dowd.
We need a short, catchy name for it: "Oscar," "Emmy," "Tony" and "Grammy" are already taken.
How about "The Dowdy"?

Congressman Suggests People Will Don 'White Hoods' If Wilson Not Rebuked
Lordy! But before we rush off and give the "I Hear Screaming And Bullwhips Cracking" award to Congresspig Hank Johnson, D-Ga, perhaps we should wait a day or two to see if some other bright-bulb manages to one-up him.
Perhaps tomorrow's news will feature a Congress-hawg who announces that every time the Joe Wilson video is replayed, s/he clearly hears the sound of bodies bumping together in the wind, swaying from the lynching tree.
I wonder if the Right Honorable Hank Johnson, D-Ga, is the same Congressboob who Rush featured with a video clip on his TV show back in '93, speaking before the CSPAN cameras lecturing us on the "hundreds of millions" of Africans who were thrown off the slave ships en route to Amerika, so that even now, "scientists say" that sharks are still swimming the same routes the slavers plowed through the Atlantic, hoping for yet more bodies to be thrown their way. (Wow! Some sharks have long memories! I wonder how many memories I'll still have when I'm 175 years old?)
