Grand Ayatollah Hoseinali Montazeri, in a message to all Shiite clergy, says "the recent events and atrocities should be an alarm bell for the clergy," and warned that their silence regarding recent offenses is being abused by the government.

Pointing out the power of every word uttered by the clergy, Ayatollah Montazeri called on them to find a way out of the crisis that has gripped the country since the disputes over the June presidential elections.
Following the victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Iran's elections, people across the nation in unison with defeated candidates MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi announced the victory fraudulent. Government forces cracked down violently on mass demonstrations by shooting at people on the streets and arresting thousands of people.
Many detainees have reportedly been tortured and raped. Over one hundred protesters have been presented in mass trials recanting their claims of vote-fraud and incriminating themselves in a conspiracy to topple the regime. Opposition groups claim the confessions are all coerced.
Ayatollah Montazeri advised all Shiite clergy to discuss the current crisis together with Mehdi Karroubi, MirHosein Mousavi, wise and moderate representatives and pious experts of the system, and to put their conclusions into immediate action.
Ayatollah Montazeri, who was one of the top leaders of the 1979 Iranian Revolution alongside Ayatollah Khomeni and involved in the establishment of the Islamic Republic, writes that he is "ashamed" of all the oppression committed in the name of Velayat-e Faqih. Velayat-e Faqih, is the unique concept of the Islamic Republic that leaves the guardianship of the state in the hands of the Vali-e Faqih, a member of the clergy also known as the supreme leader.
In his role as one of the founders of the Velayat-e Faqih, Ayatollah Montazeri writes that he feels "responsible before God for the blood that has been spilled and the offenses that have been committed against the rights of innocent people" in the name of this religious entity.
Mr. Montazeri condemned the state-supported clergy who have backed government acts of violence and oppression, and warned officials that this course of action threatens the future of the Islamic Republic system.
Now there’s a raghead with integrity!
It’s time for all good Iranians to join in on an ‘Open Season’ against all hardliners!
This is not the first time Montazeri has critiqued Khamenei. He & the Supreme Leader have bad blood. Montazeri would’ve succeeded Khomeini had Khamenei not pushed him aside. He’s kept Montazeri under house arrest for years. His motives are not just to get Khamenei & Ahmadinejad out, but to take over as Supreme Leader.
Of course, Rafsanjani wants the job too. They’ll all be vying for it. While they fight the students could overthrow the regime once and for all if they had weapons sent to them by the CIA...but not under 0bummer.
This guy never changes even his looks - remember “Ringo”??
This guy helped overthrow the Shah. There is still no indication that any of these guys will end their support for Hezbollah or their nuclear program.
“Mr. Montazeri condemned the state-supported clergy who have backed government acts of violence and oppression, and warned officials that this course of action threatens the future of the Islamic Republic system.”
Doesn’t sound like he is against the Islamic part of their govt.
odds, some Iranian topics.
