Ambulances race to Byrd's home By: Manu Raju September 22, 2009 10:16 AM EST

Ambulances and fire trucks were dispatched to the Northern Virginia home of Sen. Robert Byrd Tuesday morning.

A neighbor of the 91-year-old West Virginia Democrat said several ambulances were outside his residence in McLean, Va., and a Byrd spokesman said the senator suffered a fall in his home. An officer at the McLean Fire Department said that a unit was dispatched at 9:10 to the address where Byrd lives, but he declined to comment on the substance of the response.

Byrd – the longest-serving senator in the nation’s history – has been absent from the Senate for much of the year and has been in and out of the hospital battling various ailments.

“Byrd apparently stood up too fast this morning in his home and fell down,” said Jesse Jacobs, a spokesman for the senator. “To err on the side of caution his caregiver called an ambulance. He was taken to the hospital where he is currently being checked out. At this point in time there is no indication that he will be admitted.”

South Park will be busy next episode which features hell. First the whale of Chappaquiddick, and now the K in Kleagle.

If there is ever a 'working fire' in your area, you might be glad they showed up when. Better to have an excess of manpower and equipment 90% of the time than come up short the other 10%, especially if you or yours are involved.

Where I grew up, young men developed their sense of responsibility, leadership, and community involvement in the VFD. I never served in the military, but I am ever thankful that I was in the VFD there and came to know the sense of brotherhood shared by people who meet a common and potentially lethal threat for the benefit of others you often do not even know.

While I have been blessed with the opportunity to do many things in my life, those years stand out as some of the very best.

“In Obamacare world, he would arrive at the hospital for some end of life counseling”

No he wouldn't. Byrd is a member of the ruling elite and would not have 0bamacare. He has the best money health care insurance money can buy.....................................
and we pay for it.

“They always send fire trucks along with ambulances even if there’s no report of fire. Seems like a waste of resources.”

There are two people on an ambulance. As a rule, sick people and particularly those who who fall, are overweight. Many times they are morbidly obese.

We send the extra resources for lift assistance and it really helps to have some extra folks if you are running a full code (CPR) There is a lot of stuff to do in the first few minutes that directly impacts survivability.

That being said, the multiple ambulances and trucks bit confuses me on a fall.

I live with constant mild back pain from lifting large patients over 22 yrs.

Even if Byrd boots it, the media will still follow the talking points and reference the Democrats’ 60-vote majority.

Right now, they have 58. If Byrd boots it they’ll have 57. But the LSM will still say “filibuster-proof majority” every chance they get.

Another senseless standing-up-too-fast hospitalization. When will they learn?

Quite frankly, I wish him the best. It’s very difficult getting old and losing body function. If his constituents or governor want him to resign, then I’m sure they’ll take it up with him. It’s their decision.

Fire fighters are also trained Paramedics. That’s why they are the first responders.

Everything in the state is named after him, but the state.

When he does pass, they're going to change the spelling to "West Byrdginia" in his honor.

EMTs have a lower level of medical knowledge and training vs Fire fighters. EMTs are the “mail room” equivalent of first repsonders. They have very limited resources to use and a very narrow field in which they can offer medical assistance.

They probably got in over their head and called in for asistance.

My biggest concern is the change in the way Congress does 'bidness'. It used to be that you bought votes on the hill by providing jobs constructing pork barrel projects or with farm susbsidies, or somesuch, but most required that people work for the wages in order to benefit. Sure, that selectively lined pockets at the management level, but wage earners had to work for their pay, or at least show up and sleep in the orange pickup.

Now, though, the tendency is to dump huge sums on corrupt organizations and let the cash be looted directly, neither providing jobs nor benefit (however questionable) to the community.

With the shift in power from old school corruption to the 'new school', the methodology of looting the taxpayers has changed, is more direct, less accountable, and much quicker.

I don’t think he’s been a regular show-up at the Senate for at least four years. If you toss in the mental test....he’s been lacking for six years. The sad thing is that the folks in WV would vote again today for this guy...if they had to.
