Are There John McCain Birthers, Too?
Newsweek ^ | David A. Graham

Posted on 09/28/2009 9:46:05 AM PDT by nickcarraway

Yesterday, Public Policy Polling released results of a poll showing that 42 percent of Republicans nationwide do not believe Barack Obama was born in the United States. This sort of statistic has become old news by now. Despite overwhelming evidence that the president was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born citizen, a core of Americans remain convinced he was born overseas.

But with pollsters frantically trying to get in on the birther action, has anyone stopped to ask whether Sen. John McCain was born in the United States? McCain was actually born in Panama, but is considered a natural-born citizen, since he was born to an American military family stationed on a U.S. base. And, except for perhaps a small fringe, no one has questioned whether he would have been constitutionally qualified to be president.

We've poked around a bit and been unable to find any professional poll that asked Americans whether they believed McCain was born in the U.S. The fact that he was physically born outside the U.S. should have had no bearing on his own legitimacy, real or perceived, had he been elected president. But it would be interesting to see how many of the people who believe, incorrectly, that Obama was born outside the U.S. realize that McCain actually was not.

The evidence for Obama’s birth in Hawaii is ANYTHING BUT OVERWHELMING! The author of the article has been given talking points to create a diversion. Ya see, we ain’t lookin’ for John McCain’s birth certificate because we be hatin’ black folk - or so the gist is supposed to be.

Pure nonsense. MSM journalists must think everyone else is an idiot or they’d realize that we could see through their bunk.

Is it not true that McCains birth on a US Military base is what makes him natural born and had his mother gone into labor and delivered while she was OFF base, he would not be natural born?

I was also born in a territory of the US in 1949, and am a natural born US citizen. My parents were both American citizens as were McCain’s.

I am not a fan of McCain, but this is ridiculous. Leave it to Newsweek to try and prop up Obama with printing a myth about McCain. Comparing apples to oranges.

Well, there were McCain “birthers” until Congressional hearings were held to determine whether or not he could prove he was a natural born citizen. Could be that's why no one is asking now that the proof has been before a Congressional committee that was hoping to rule him out of the running.

How about we have the same for the guy already illegally in office?

have a nice day

I guarantee if McCain had won, the left wouldn’t be making an issue of it for fear of elevating Sarah Palin to the presidency.

Is Newsweek still around?

The last time I saw a copy was at my dentist’s office and it was already a couple of years old when I saw it.

Really, such as Obama refusing to release the actual birth certificate, instead of some legal certification which there is pretty good indication that it has been legally altered. $10 and Obama can turn that 42% into 20% and end most of the legal challenges. Really, what is on the actual birth certificate??????

Surely Newsweek can provide us with the name of the doctor and which hospital Obama was born at!

Hey intrepid reporter. Next time you get to ask Obama a question, ask him what hospital he was born in.

And then after he answers, ask him why his autobiography lists a different hospital than the answer he just gave.

Obama himself has give two different hospitals as the one he was born in.

If McQueeg had actually been elected, the same group (birthers) would be trying to prove he's not qualified.

Hello, President Palin!

There are Birthers who define natural-born citizen as one born on U.S. soil with two U.S. citizen parents. That would exclude McCain as well.

“And, except for perhaps a small fringe, no one has questioned whether he (McCain) would have been constitutionally qualified to be president.”

No love lost between the birthers and I, but this is just ludicrous. “perhaps a small fringe” includes the entire U.S. Congress taking up the matter and declaring unequivocally that John McCain is a natural born citizen? An entire Congressional hearing over the matter was ‘perhaps a small fringe’?

No. The matter received perhaps MORE attention than it was due on the subject of McCain's eligibility, and not from some small fringe group, but by the U.S. Congress. The matter of 0zero’s eligibility has not received the same due diligence.
