450 Mayors Petition Obama To Adopt Broad Gun Reform
The Washington Post ^ | October 3, 2009 | David S. Fallis

Posted on 10/02/2009 7:54:07 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

A new report from a national coalition of mayors urges President Obama to adopt dozens of reforms to help curb gun violence, including steps to crack down on problems at gun shows and the creation of a federal interstate firearms trafficking unit.

The "Blueprint for Federal Action on Illegal Guns," a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post, presents 40 recommendations that "would dramatically improve law enforcement's ability to keep guns out of the hands of criminals -- and, in doing so, save innocent lives."

The strategies outlined by the Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a bipartisan group of about 450 mayors nationwide, focus on the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The agency, which has been sent a copy of the report, declined to comment.

--snip--

ATF agents should have greater discretion to conduct criminal investigations at gun shows identified as sources of firearms later seized in crimes, the report states, noting that "criminal activity endemic to some gun shows goes unchecked."(continued)

100 percent pure unvarnished B.S. Every place that has restricted private ownership of weapons has seen violent crime INCREASE!

Heh, I just knew I'd find ol' Ray Nagin on that list. He has so much practical experience to offer to the organization.

I did sort of enjoy the fact that only *one* mayor in all of Texas was foolish enough to participate. Maybe he drew the short straw.

Well lets see them come and take them. I sold all of mine last year. Private sales. I do not have even ONE left!

Guns are dangerous! I got rid of every last one of them.

Yesiree! I did.

Promise to kick out two wetbacks — and/or this dumb@$$ mayor — and we’ll hand you a Texas flag! ‘-)

That's an amazing cultural difference.

Yeah, you'd think Texas and California were in different countries. Who knows, they might be in the near future.

When I moved to Texas, I was told that I needed to show possession of a gun collection and a pickup truck - and demonstrate my ability to use both.

Keeps out the riff-raff. ;-)

Just goes to show that there are 450 mayors in the US that don’t understand the US Constitution and therefore are unqualified for the position that they hold.

Next.

Is there a listing of these 450 mayors? It would be very useful on election day. Each and every one of them is obviously qualified for gainful employment in the fast food industry.

including steps to crack down on problems at gun shows

I just got back from a gun show. Didn't notice a single problem.

This article mentions "ATF agents should have greater discretion to conduct criminal investigations at gun shows identified as sources of firearms later seized in crimes,.." But, in typical WaPo, main stream media 'reporting' fails to mention what stops the ATF or any other law enforcement agency from investigating if criminal activity is suspected. They don't ask the question because they already know the answer and it doesn't support their biased position. The answer is there is nothing currently stopping the ATF or state/local law enforcement from investigating suspected criminal activity. (there have been police officers at every gun show I can remember attending)

By recent actions, the ATF has clearly demonstrated they're more interested in harassing people over shoelaces that can convert a rifle to automatic fire or prosecuting some poor guy whose rifle malfunctioned and fired more than one round on a trigger pull than they are in investigating crime.

I hope for the sake of our beloved republic that we never are.

I know that things are pretty dismal and utterly screwed up in California right now, but I have faith that the American people who live there will find their inner patriot at some point, and come out swinging against the commies that have ruined their state.

Don't see either Monterey or Carmel listed. Wierd, I assumed I would. I only note because those two cities are old stompin' grounds.

If the 2nd amendment didn’t allow for the individual possesion of firearms, then why didn’t the founding fathers immediately start confiscating firearms after July 4th, 1776?

Everything but the kitchen sink - and actually enforcing the many, many, many, MANY laws already on the books.

THAT would be too difficult, since it targets highly mobile and even occasionally rather violent lawbreakers, rather than innocent Americans sitting around watching TV in their livingrooms, who require what firearms they own for self-defense - since, as we’ve seen, no one’s minding the lawbreakers.

And, of course, our inept, misguided, ineffectual, moronic, and corrupt politicians can’t be seen as impotent in the face of crime they are both incapable of addressing, and unwilling to even attempt to address.

No votes in that.

They have to APPEAR to be doing something for the sake of an electorate which is largely too stupid, too preoccupied with their pleasures, and too indifferent to the distinction between justice and injustice to recognize, or even really care about, the difference between criminals and citizens.

As for law enforcement, they don’t get paid for sitting around on their slowly spreading bums twiddling their thumbs, collecting their benefits, and waiting for their pensions; yet certainly it’s better - and a heckuva lot easier and far less risky - to hassle John Q. Citizen than to seem to be doing nothing; or, worse yet, run around looking for and tangling with genuine Bad Guys.

From what I’ve read some “mayors” were added to this list without their agreement.
