McCain was, out of the 8 candidates who were originally in the running for the GOP in ‘08, my last pick. I remember talking with folks in ‘00 about how I thought he was worthless-that’s when even the ‘Rats were swooning how great he was.
The only half reasonable explanation I can come up with myself, is that the race baiting poverty pimps have cowed greater white America so severely that it was willing to swallow any pill. ACORN is probably not enough to explain all the differential between the candidates.
Let a President Sarah Palin appoint Cheney as secretary of defense or some such thing. He would not want to be president.
Do we really need any more evidence that McCain’s skin cancer actually made it’s way inside the brain and is munching away even as we speak?

Fraud helped, as did getting essentially 100% of the black vote (but the ‘Rats already get 95%). But those things alone didn’t do it.
My personal theory is that a huge cohort of the American voting populus doesn’t give any more thought to the vote for POTUS than they would a vote for American Idol. They’re moved by whims and vague promises of something better. And they were voting AGAINST the status quo as much as FOR change.
It’s not that they’re stupid, more like they can’t be bothered to study the issue and think through the candidates and their positions.
We (i.e. Freepers) are NOT the majority — by and large we are much more aware of the issues (both sides of them, actually) and much better educated in politics. It’s hard to remember that sometimes but I think it’s true.
By the way, IF there is a tsunami of disgust that sweeps the ‘Rats out of power in ‘10 and ‘12 — and I pray there is — sadly, it’ll be more of the same — primarily a knee-jerk expression of “i don’t like the tone of the status quo, let’s try a different idol er I mean politician” rather than a well-thought-out choice.
But, as time goes on and the means of educating the populus become more varied than the driveby teevee stations and newspapers, s-l-o-w-l-y but surely things will change, for the better, on the voter awareness front. What can I say, I’m an optimist.
