The Chicken Fix (Look out - here it comes!)
Wall Street Journal ^ | October 25, 2009 | Opinion Asia

Posted on 11/02/2009 9:24:41 PM PST by Selene

And now some welcome news for a change: In a little-noticed move, the U.S. Congress tore down a barrier to imports of chicken from China last week. It's a victory for free trade and for a more rational approach to safety standards.

President Obama signed an appropriations bill Wednesday that clears the way for the imports by allowing the U.S. Department of Agriculture to conduct in China the safety inspections U.S. law requires for any country exporting food to America. The congressional move in 2007 to block funding for those regulatory steps amounted to an import ban. Now USDA will go through its normal regulatory process to open the door to Chinese imports, which could take 18 months or so.

They had better have to clearly mark any chicken as originating in China so I can avoid it. I don’t even want to think of what kind of problems this will bring. And so what if we banned it outright, since they haven’t complied with even pet food regulations to date.

at a time when American trade leadership is in question and protectionist pressures are mounting, even a small positive step like this is most welcome.

Yeah, our trade "leadership" is really in question. Our annual trade deficit is around $700 billion now, and $266 billion deficit with China in 2008.

And will these Chinese chicken products be labeled at to country of origin? Many have been blocking that bit of information for US consumers, for years.

"Why would anyone want those diseased chickens? I’m surprised that Dems are wanting this. Don’t they know that Domestic agriculture has a smaller Carbon Footprint."

As to your first point: no one in their right mind. As to your second point, carbon footprint only matters when it is a tool of controlling the masses and making the likes of al gore powerful and wealthy.

"Life without meat is just fine."

We will have to agree to disagree on this matter.

You're probably right. They were Clinton friends as I remember.

Tyson Pilgrims and others make beaucoup money exporting things like chicken feet and assorted innards to China which are regarded as delicacies. Also it saves hundreds of millions of lbs of land fill space.

Watch our poultry industry become noncompetitive real fast. But according to the Obama method of looking at things: They are based in states not on our team> screw them...

The Chinese don’t care for their animals well. PETA won’t have any chicken farms here to picket.

"Tyson Pilgrims and others make beaucoup money exporting things like chicken feet and assorted innards to China which are regarded as delicacies."

A flaw in your logic. If the Chinese are growing the chickens to export to The U.S. they can keep the nasty parts we won't eat.

What? Tyson will not be able to import chicken from China?

Probably can make more by doing that than importing muslims to butcher chickens grown in the US.
