CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (Reuters) – Gunmen with automatic weapons burst into a Mexican strip club on the U.S. border, opened fire on patrons and killed six people including an American soldier, the army said on Wednesday.

The hooded gunmen stormed into the bar in Ciudad Juarez as strippers were dancing for customers, sought out the six men and shot them each several times. A 26-year-old off-duty U.S. soldier who had crossed over from El Paso, Texas, was among the dead, army spokesman Enrique Torres said.

"It appears drugs were being sold at the place," Torres said of the strip joint. "The hitmen went directly for their victims, no one else."

Terrible loss.

I guess they mean it when they tell US citizens to stay away from Juarez.

Is this one of those “shot heard round the world” type moments.

Sometimes you get the wrong guy.

And that is why the Commander of the Army Post has made Juarez off limits to military personnel. This soldier wasn't following the wise advice of his commanders. Nuevo Loredo, Ciudad Acuna, and Juarez are off limits to military personnel for this very reason.

It’s a war zone..

He got caught up in things he shouldn’t have.

Condolences to the family.

There are good strip clubs in El Paso, ladies from Juarez, from what I hear. Why he needed to go to Mexico is unknown.

When I was in El Paso, a mexican worker at a 7-11 told me to stay out of Juarez. When Mexican are telling Gringos to stay out, I tend to listen.

A recent Mexican study put the city's homicide rate higher than notorious murder capitals such as Venezuela's Caracas, the U.S. city of New Orleans and South Africa's Cape Town.

Wow! that's bad. Juarez is even worse than Chocolate City.

I was going to say, anyone who goes to Mexico should have their head examined, but then I remembered the same could be said of Detroit etc.

It is a shame about the American soldier but why in the hell would one go ACROSS the border for a beer?

This guy was just plain dumb. Ciudad is one of the worst places in the world. No good reason to go there

There are neighborhoods everywhere that the wise person stays out of, unless they have business there. Your comment reminded me of how I could tell how bad a area was by how concerned the people living there were for my safety when I was there on business.

“It appears drugs were being sold at the place,” Torres said of the strip joint. “The hitmen went directly for their victims, no one else.”

This is from the story itself. If the reporting is accurate I note 2 things 1) the gunmen went after specific people so the soldier was being targeted even though in mufti. 2) The army refers to him as a US Soldier not as an AMERICAN CITIZEN you don’t have to be a citizen to be in the service. What if this guy was just a mule for the wrong folks? Just asking
