Obama Declines To Defend U.S. Bombing Of Hiroshima, Nagasaki
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Defending the decision of the United States to drop nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII is not a comfortable thing to do when you're in Japan. But if you're President of the United States, you must do it. Diplomatically, yes. With sympathy for the civilian victims, yes. But you must do it.

But when it came time today for Barack Obama to do so, he failed in that fundamental duty. The very first reporter [from Fuji TV] called on at the joint press conference with PBO and Japanese PM Hatayama in Tokyo today put the question to Pres. Obama in blunt and explicit terms:

JAPANESE REPORTER: What is your understanding of the historical meaning of the A-bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Do you think it was the right decision?

Obama took a deep breath, paused . . . and punted . . .

My father and father-in-law were both in the Pacific in 1945.

My family would probably not exist if Harry had not dropped the bombs.

Obama made a major error, when he stated he was happy that PM Yukio Hatoyama pledged 5 billion dollars over five years for the Afghanistan War.

BUT wait, Yukio (they are on a first name basis, don’t you know) only promised 5 billion yen over five years, and that is only about 56 million USD, NOT the $5 Billion Obama stated... Obama needs a better teleprompter, one that can convert yen to usd...

5 billion Japanese yen = 55.68500 million U.S. dollars

“He’s shown what he’s made of - gelatin.”

Actually, a smart reporter would have phrased the question by quoting JFK’s strong support for the need to use the bomb (while he was a liberal on domestic policy, too many forget how hardline Kennedy was when it came to military matters and foreign policy) and asking Obama whether he agreed with this. It is unimaginable that Obama would have publicly voiced any criticism of JFK. Of course such a response would not have revealed the man’s true feelings, but at least it would have avoided embarrassing Americans to have to see their spineless president show his true colors.

I'd like to hear a return volley of "What is your understanding of the historical meaning of the A-bombing in Pearl Harbor? Do you think it was the right decision? After all, we didn't start the war in the Pacific."

While I'm dreaming, I want a pony.

Well, he certainly slithered around that question.

PBO gave a halting response that utterly failed to answer the question.

Did someone unplug Totus again?

Once more, with correctness...

I'd like to hear a return volley of "What is your understanding of the historical meaning of sneak attack on Pearl Harbor? Do you think it was the right decision? After all, we didn't start the war in the Pacific."

While I'm dreaming, I want a pony.

ALSO, did you notice that Yukio’s very first statement in his speech, was over the concern of the tragic shooting in Texas of our US soldiers.

Think back, remember how long it took Obama to mention this in his speech he gave in America on the day of the shooting... after many callouts to his many supporters and friends... he finally mentioned that yes, we had a shooting in Texas.

Very telling about leadership and statesmanship, or Obama’s lack thereof.

I thought it was USD and not yen, you may be right as I was surprised when I heard of that sizable amount.

Makes sense now. I saw part of that presser, Obama actually said he forgot some of the original questions the reporters asked, and they had thrown a ton of questions at Obama.

And he totally flubbed everything, he had no spark, had no impression of even being awake fully, he displayed a visible sigh when the PM was giving his speech.

This POTUS is useless, I am very sure the headlines in Japan today will be pointing all this and more out.

..the spineless one apologizes again for victory. In Japan whose country recently had to duck China backed North Korean missiles......beckons back to a US victory and only confirms the ever growing world opinion...HE'S WEAK and SPINELESS, something our military fighting men and women are sure to notice.....

I’d like to hear from our Freeper friends in Japan what the local reaction is to this. Seems like his non committal to any position at all on this would make the Japanese as mad as we are.

Harry Truman was a Democrat as well. Obama should have said that he would not second guess the decision made by a US President fighting for national survival in the midst of a global war that consumed over 80 million lives, including 416,000 Americans killed and more than 800,000 wounded. He could then say that he preferred to look forward than backwards and that Japan and the US have a strong alliance and warm friendship with Japan and its people.

Pathetic but expected from President O’Putty. I’m actually a little relieved he didn’t offer an apology. A dodge is better than a total capitulation.
